World Golf Championships – Accenture Matchplay Championship

Course : The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain golf course is set at high altitude in the High Sonoran Desert. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and it is a very long course with a length of around 7800 yards.  The course is a par 72 with four par 5's and has some fairly long par 4's which may play advantage to the bigger hitters. The fairways are wide with large bunkers around them and are usually not too difficult to hit from the tee but some shots need to be played carefully over desert waste as this is the courses biggest hazard areas and some holes on the final stretch play through a cactus lined canyon. The greens are large and are undulating and can be very quick.

Inside The Field : 64 of the Worlds best golfers will tee up this week in the Match play knockout event format in Arizona to become the first winner of 2014 in a World Golf Championship Tournament.  Three notable absentees this week are World Number One Tiger Woods, Masters Champion Adam Scott and British Open Champion Phil Mickelson.

Henrik Stenson World Number Three and winner of this event – beating Geoff Ogilvy in 2007 – will now headline this weeks event.  The Swede had a sensational 2013 winning both the European Tour Race to Dubai and also winning the PGA Tour FedEx Cup.

Matt Kuchar will be back in Arizona looking to win this event back to back.  Hunter Mahan last years beaten finalist will also be here looking to be champion again as he did back in 2012.

The tournament is set out into four brackets – 1. Bobby Jones 2. Ben Hogan 3. Gary Player 4. Sam Snead ( 16 players in each group which are seeded ) Seed 1 v Seed 16, Seed 2 v Seed 15 and so on..

The Semi Finals will consist of the winners of the groups below

Bobby Jones Winner  v  Ben Hogan Winner

Gary Player Winner   v   Sam Snead Winner

Previous Winners

2013 – Matt Kuchar beat Hunter Mahan

2012 – Hunter Mahan beat Rory McIlroy

2011 – Luke Donald beat Martin Kaymer

2010 – Ian Poulter beat Paul Casey

2009 – Geoff Ogilvy beat Paul Casey

Selections

My selections this week will come from players who have been involved in a Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup team in recent years, all of the last seven victors in this event had been a member of such teams.  Also members of the PGA Tour have a very good record here at Dove Mountain.  Experience playing in this event the year before looks very valuable with the last seven winners having done so.

Webb Simpson     33/1   each way – Open a new Betfred Account on a mobile device – BET £10 GET £10 FREE!

Simpson got to the quarter finals of this event last year only to be beaten by the eventual runner up and 2012 champion, Hunter Mahan.  If he can repeat this form in 2014, the U.S. Open Champion of 2012, must be massive ‘each way’ value.  Webb has been drawn in the Bobby Jones bracket, which looks pretty weak compared to some of the other groupings.  His first round match is against T. Jaidee, which he should progress through pretty comfortably.

Matt Kuchar   28/1   each way – Open a new William Hill account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

‘Kuch’ was last years winner, beating 2012 winner Hunter Mahan.  In the last three years of this event, Matt has at least reached the quarter finals each time, so is very comfortable playing here in Arizona.  Matt has featured in many match-play events, including being on the winning U.S. Presidents Cup Team in  2011 and 2013 respectively and also being on the losing U.S. Ryder Cup Team of 2010 and 2012.  Kuchar has been put in the Gary Player bracket where Jordan Speith may be feared if he takes to the course and format.

Hunter Mahan     25/1   each way Open a new Coral account by clicking this link bet just £5 and get a free £20 bet!

Last years runner up and the 2012 winner, Mahan, seems to love this place.  When he won this event in 2012 he beat hot favourite Rory McIlroy which surprised a lot of punters.  Hunter is vastly experienced in this kind of format, being  a part of the U.S. President Cup Teams of 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013, and also being on the U.S. Ryder Cup Team in 2008 and 2010.  He has been drawn into the Sam Snead bracket which looks the hardest of the lot, but with his form here and current form this season, everything points for another good week for the “Golf Boy”.

Dustin Johnson   20/1   each way – Open a new Coral account by clicking this link bet just £5 and get a free £20 bet!

Johnson is the first player since Tiger Woods to win at least once in each of his first seven seasons coming out of college.  Although Dustin’s record is pretty poor in this event he has all the capabilities needed to win, one worry would be that his driving may let him down because if you go in the desert here, then you have certainly lost the hole.  Johnson has three top-10 finishes this season, finishing second twice within the last two weeks, so he is coming into this event full of confidence.  Dustin has represented the U.S. Presidents Cup Team and also the Ryder Cup team.
