Cheltenham Day 1 Tips

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – 1.30pm Cheltenham Tip

This looks like a very competitive race in which I’m going to opt for experience over potential. Ballyandy seems to go really well at Cheltenham with two wins out of three appearances at the track and he won the Betfair Hurdle nicely at Newbury last time. He won at last years festival and connections are confident he’ll run a big race. Melon could be very good but I cannot justify backing him at such prohibitive odds based on what he has (or hasn’t) achieved.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tip – Ballyandy 10/3 William Hill.

*OFFER* – if your horse wins the first race you get a 25% bonus, if it loses you get a refund (must be 5 lengths or more). Get 3 free £10 bets via this William Hill sign-up link.

Arkle Challenge Trophy – 2.10pm Cheltenham Tip

Altior looks like a steering job here, but there is no juice in his price and we are better off looking at each way propositions. I like Royal Caviar (E/W) as he is a great jumper, he showed that by winning his chase debut at Thurles and he was going well when falling at the last in the Irish Arkle. He has good hurdles form behind Sutton Place and even though he is a nine-year-old he is unexposed. If you’re into it, it might be worth looking at him in the ‘Without Altior’ market as well.

Arkle Trophy Tip – Royal Caviar (each-way) 20/1 bet365.

Altior to win – 6/1 at Betfair.

Altior & Douvan to win – 10/1 at Paddy Power.

Altior to win – 4/1 at 888Sport.

Ultima Handicap Chase – 2.50pm Cheltenham Tip

Noble Endeavor (E/W) has shown good form this season in defeat to Empire Of Dirt and in winning the Paddy Power Chase at Christmas. He was second in the Martin Pipe at the festival two years ago and fell in last years National Hunt Chase when beginning to mount his challenge so we know he likes the track. Davy Russell is on board which is a positive as he is a master around Cheltenham.

Ultima Handicap Tip – Noble Endeavor 10/1 Paddy Power.

Champion Hurdle – 3.30pm Cheltenham Tip

An ultra-competitive renewal of this race can go the way of Yanworth for our next Cheltenham day 1 tip. The only time he has been beaten over hurdles was by Yorkhill in last year’s Neptune Novices’ Hurdle and you could argue he was unlucky that day as he had to go three deep the majority of the way round. He just does what he has to do to win and he will stay up the hill best of all.

Champion Hurdle Tip – Yanworth 3/1 Betfair.

Mares Hurdle – 4.10pn Cheltenham Tip

It looks like this will be between the two Mullins runners. Ruby Walsh has opted to ride Limini which is probably a tip in itself, but I think it might pay to stick with the proven one in Vroum Vroum Mag. She has shown time and time again that she is an excellent mare and the two-mile trip at Doncaster where she just got her head in front last time was not enough of a stamina test for her. The 2m4f trip in this race is her optimum and I’ll think she’ll stamp her class on the field.

Mares Hurdle Tip – Vroum Vroum Mag 11/4 Ladbrokes.
