The goals eventually came in Zenica, not that many people saw them because of the dense fog which engulfed the pitch.

Robbie Brady got a crucial away goal against a strangely lacklustre Bosnian team who need an Edin Dzeko equaliser to go into this second leg on level terms.

It’s now a difficult task for Bosnia as few teams come away with the victory from the Aviva Stadium. Once again Martin O’Neill has his side well drilled and organised and difficult to break down.

Ciaran Clark and Stephen Ward stepped in admirably in defence to replace the absentees and they very nearly came away with a clean sheet. Despite Bosnia dominating for long spells of the match, it’s Ireland who must be favourites to qualify now they have that all important away goal.

They are tough to beat, particularly with a roaring crowd behind them and the Irish fans will be providing a wall of noise once again as they aim to propel their team into France 2016 to join Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

John Walters and John O’Shea are certainly likely to return, the former should give more support to the increasingly isolated Daryl Murphy and link up the midfield to the forward line. The latter’s return will bolster the defence, although they coped admirably throughout.

Bosnia attempted to go for the early goal in this tie, in the end, the opposite prevailed and they netted late on, they will need to start on the front foot here or they could find themselves planning a summer at home.

The Irish aren’t likely to outscore many teams, but they do possess great tactical awareness under O’Neill and it will be interesting to see whether they go for the first goal here or invite the pressure and hit Bosnia on the break.

Chances came and went for the home side in Zenica and they will have to score here to stand any chance of making it through.

To claim a draw (and almost win it) at a stadium where the home side consider themselves formidable is a tremendous effort and I think as their victory over Germany displayed, they are dogged enough to keep anyone at bay. They have just about enough firepower and creativity down the other end to finish teams off, albeit often by a single goal. I fancy them to prevail here.

The second of the Republic of Ireland v Bosnia betting tips is for Ireland to win. It is available at 6/5 with Coral

If he returns to the side, I fancy Jonathan Walters to have a huge impact. The Stoke striker is never going to be the most glamorous member of a Premier League team, but most managers would have him in their squad. His attitude and aptitude are admiral and I think he could find the net during the 90 minutes.

The third of the Republic of Ireland v Bosnia betting tips is for Jonathan Walters to score anytime. He is available at 6/4 with Coral
