Moldova might not be playing in Euro 2016, but they’ve been getting plenty of practice in ahead of qualifying for Russia 2018. They were narrowly defeated by Croatia on Friday, but the scoreline should have been heavier. Switzerland are their next opponents as they look to bounce back from their defeat to Belgium.

Lugano hosts this warm-up match for Switzerland before taking their place in Group A alongside France, Albania and Romania. They have announced a fairly young squad, which included three teenagers as they look to bring through the next generation.

Moldova were lucky to come away with just a 1-0 defeat against Croatia. Andrej Kramaric netted after nine minutes and it appeared we had a rout on our hands, but they couldn’t add to it. They offered little in attack and their lone frontman faced a frustrating evening before being replaced.

 

Going back through their results, they don’t score enough goals, but they aren’t often heavily beaten. They have only conceded a single goal in their last three matches and they haven’t been on the end of a big defeat since 2013. 2-0 and 2-1 are heaviest of late. Switzerland have lost their last three matches and scored just a single goal in that time. Seferovic was dismissed against Belgium despite the match being a friendly.

 

The first Switzerland v Moldova prediction is for a low scoring affair. Many will expect Switzerland to hit Moldova for four or five, but I don’t think it will be that easy.
