Channel 4 racing betting tips for Saturday 16th November with the feature being the Paddy Power Gold Cup.

Another step into the jump season on Channel 4 this Saturday with the Paddy Power Gold Cup. The race looks to be its usual puzzle with rapidly improving youngsters on career high marks, the challenge is trying to find which one can find that further improvement.

Paddy Power Gold Cup Tips

Johns Spirit (8/1 Paddy Power) bolted up on his season return here showing a much improved level of form, whether he can reproduce that with another 10lbs in his back is open to debate. Champion Court (13/2 Paddy Power) loves it round here with 3 career wins at Cheltenham including last time when beating Menorah.

Champion trainer Nicky Henderson has a strong hand with Finians Rainbow, Rajdhani Express and Nadiya De La Vega. The first named would pick these up and carry them in his pomp and at 12/1 with plenty of firms he's worth watching in the market.

A token vote in a very difficult race goes to Gift of Dgab who is overpriced at 28/1 with Bet Victor. A smart novice chaser, he returned from a 17 month break in the Kerry National where he travelled beautifully before the lack of a run told close home. Trainer Tony Martin does well with raiders to these shores and isn't inclined to tilt at windmills, a recent run over hurdles should put him spot on for this.

Cheltenham Betting Tips Saturday

The Channel 4 coverage begins at 1.50pm with a real test of stamina which looks sure to suit another Irish raider in the Jim Culloty trained Spring Heeled (8/1 Stan James) who is steadily improving every time he steps up in trip and another should bring about more improvement. Welsh and Scottish National winners, Monbeg Dude and Godsmejudge should both be well suited by the demands of this race but like Bet365 Gold Cup winner Quentin Collonges they need to find more to win off career high marks.

The 3.00pm at Cheltenham is another head scratcher of a handicap which should prove to be a good guide to the Pertemps final at the Cheltenham Festival. It's a race full of progressive types, none more so than the Paul Nicholls trained Southfield Theatre (8/1 William Hill) who was massively impressive when barely coming off the bridle to win on his return at Wincanton. His 1 1/4 length beating of the Alan King trained Seventh Sign (now rated 132) when giving him 7lbs would certainly suggest 140 is a very fair opening mark.

The list of dangers is a long one headed by the Kim Bailey trained Silver Eagle who found the step down in distance against him last time, this is likely to suit better. Lamb or Cod made a promising return at Chepstow and looks like a step up to 3 miles will suit but he didn't go on from a promising win in the same Chepstow contest last season.

A novice hurdle at 3.35pm where the vote goes to the Emma Lavelle trained Timesremembered (11/4 Stan James) who made a huge impression when winning the Persian War hurdle at Chepstow last time. The favourite underperformed there but this son of Akbar could hardly have won easier and if his jumping has been brushed up at home since he could be hard to beat. Another recent Chepstow winner in the shape of Killala Quay looks a danger. He won a weak race there as an odds on favourite but he stamped his authority on that field in a matter of strides and should find more again with that experience under his belt.

Wetherby Betting Tips Saturday

The other Channel 4 races come from Wetherby but are certainly no easier to assess. The 2.05pm over 3m 1f is full of horses who have shown their best form over shorter or further. Grouse Lodge didn't look to get home over 3 miles at Uttoxeter in March but on his Cheltenham showing last time he looks worth another go at the trip. Denali Highway improved with every outing last year but this trip is very much a step into the unknown especially first time back. At the other extreme Chac Du Cadran won over 3m 6f at Catterick last season and was sent off favourite for the Midlands National on the back of that.

A tentative vote goes to No Planning (3/1 Bet365) however who has shown good form over plenty of different trips. He likes to be right up with the pace and looks poised to strike if not giving Chac Du Cadran an easy time of things in front.

The other Wetherby race is a 2m hurdle with a recent race over course and distance being a good guide. Hartside (17/2 Bet Victor) just got on top on that occasion from Pertuis (7/1Bet365) Lifetime(13/2 generally) Mojolika (10/1 Paddy Power) and Zafranagar (6/1 Paddy Power/Bet Victor.) The last named was sent off favourite on that occasion but he is too inconsistent to trust and the runner up Pertuis is taken to come out on top of that quintet at the weights in what is a wide open handicap.
