Betfair Chase Tips

Haydock takes centre stage in Saturday with the running of the Grade 1 Betfair Chase which sees the reappearance of last seasons Gold Cup winner Bobs Worth (9/4 William Hill).

He is a worthy (pardon the pun) favourite on that achievement with at least half a stone in hand on all his rivals on official ratings. The doubt though is whether a bare 3 miles around what is a pretty sharp Haydock chase course will be in his favour. He was off the bridle in the Gold Cup at the top of the hill whilst Silviniaco Conti (11/4 William Hill) who takes him on again here was swinging away on the bridle. This track is far more likely to favour the latter and he is my idea of the winner.

The rest of the field oozes class though with Ryanair victor, Cue Card (7/1 generally) looking to prove his stamina and ex Gold Cup hero Long Run (12/1 generally) trying to put a well below par reappearance in the Charlie Hall behind him. Dynaste (6/1 generally) and Tidal Bay (9/1 Paddy Power/BetVictor) should not be underestimated although the latter could do with some more rain and The Giant Bolster (20/1 William Hill/Paddy Power) has a habit of outrunning his price in these kind of races.

Haydock Betting Tips 23rd November

A very tricky handicap hurdle kicks off the coverage at 1.50pm over 2m 4f. Top weight Magnifique Etoile came back from a long absence at Stratford 4 weeks ago when thrashing Dolatulo who ran well to finish second in the Salmon Spray hurdle at Fontwell last weekend.

More Of That (4/1 Bet365) won comfortably at Wetherby last time and a 7lb rise shouldn't be enough to stop him going well again as after just two races he is open to any amount of improvement. Another likely threat should be the Donald McCain trained Clondaw Kaempfer who was a rapidly improving novice last year before stumbling badly at Newbury last Christmas and quickly pulling up. If fully tuned up for his reappearance he can certainly take a hand in the finish.

Another wide open hurdle at 2.25pm over the fixed brushes. The top five in the betting are the top five in the weights separated by just two points with 6/1 the field. Gevrey Chambertin (6/1 William Hill) is a marginal favourite at time of writing who is on something of a recovery mission having failed to shine at the big festivals in the spring.

Master Of The Sea (7/1 generally) on the other hand ran well at the Spring festivals in the Coral Cup and behind At Fishers Cross at Aintree. The Coral Cup run shows he can be competitive in big field handicaps off similar marks whilst he has also shown a liking for soft ground. At a much bigger price Restless Harry (33/1 BetVictor) is thrown in on his old form but he has been a long way below that for a while now but given prevailing conditions he is worth a tickle at a big price. The pin has landed on top weight Trustan Times (10/1 Paddy Power) who ran a corker in defeat in the Yorshire Hurdle on his first run back. With that having blown away the cobwebs and the return to softer ground in his favour he is taken to repeat last years win in this race off a 6lb higher mark.

The final Haydock offering is a staying chase which again looks to be a pin prick job. A very tentative vote goes to Saint Are (14/1 Coral) who has kept better company than this of late and is now a pound lower than his most recent winning mark. He ran as well as could be expected on his return and this is likely to suit him much better with first time headgear likely to sharpen him up. Gas Line Boy (9/2 Paddy Power) appears to have strengthened up well over the summer. He looked as if there was more to come last time at Exeter when finding plenty for pressure and another rise in the weights may not stop him. Mac Aeda (7/1 William Hill) is another sporting headgear now. He has been running well enough and will be interesting to monitor in the betting for signed of how he had been working in blinkers at home.

Ascot Betting Tips 23rd November

The Ascot races on Channel 4's Saturday coverage may be smaller fields but are no less competitive. They begin at 2.05 with the Amlin Chase which features the seasonal debuts of Captain Chris (6/4 Bet365) and Al Ferof (10/11 Sky Bet). The betting would suggest there is little between the three of them and marginal preference is for the first named who looked all over the winner of the King George last season before Long Run outstayed him.

The Coral Hurdle at 2.40pm looks to be a match between Zarkandar (7/4 Coral) and the unbeaten Annie Power (4/5 Betfred). Zarkandar certainly holds the upper hand on what they have achieved so far but Willie Mullins is unlikely to be sending his unbeaten mare into battle here for a day trip out. At the prices I have got to side with the experience, Annie Power hasn't been extended in any of her races yet but Zarkandar represents by far the toughest opponent she has had. We will find out here if she has what it takes at the highest level.

The final Channel 4 offering at 3.15 is a trappy 2mile chase. The last Ascot meeting saw Drumshambo (7/2 Betfred) beat Lancetto, King Edmund and Fairy Rath and there is no reason why any of those three should turn the form round with the Venitia Williams trained runner. A bigger danger may come from Alasi who ran well on her seasonal return and has kept some warm company in the last year but Drumshambo is taken to notch another success.
