2.20pm Newmarket

We start with the Listed contest for fillies over 6f.  Littlemissblakeney is the form choice but could be potentially vulnerable to one who could improve past her here with PARSLEY (8/1 bet365) my weapon of choice.  The Hannon two year-olds have often needed their first runs of the season to get to peak fitness and that was the case with the daughter of Zebedee who was runner up on her debut before hacking up at Goodwood.  If she improves again she should be there or thereabouts and at least if all nine hold their ground, we can have a bet to three places.

2.40pm Newcastle 

SAAYERR (3/1 SkyBet) is the clear form choice here and ran better than his finishing position suggests in the Free Handicap first time out.  Add a Group race victory at Glorious Goodwood last season and the highest official rating in the field and you can hopefully see why I feel he has every chance – first or second is a risk I suppose (just the seven runners), but he does look the best bet on the card.

2.55pm Newmarket 

A battle of possible against probable in my eyes as the bang in form GATEWOOD (4/1 William Hill) looks to see off the out of sorts (but in theory better horse) Battalion.  My thought process is that the ground looks likely to be pretty quick in which case that may well be less of a negative for John Gosden’s six year-old than his main form book rivals and again, I would be shocked if he cannot make it into the first three home here.
