Horse racing betting tips for the 5.30pm Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday.

All eyes will be on Irish racing this weekend with Irish Derby and Australia both taking centre-stage.  This Group 1 contest over 1m4f will see the Ballydoyle superstar colt bid to claim both the English and Irish Derby, a feat last completed by Camelot for the same trainer and jockey combination.

Starting with Kingston Hill (4/1 bet365), this horse put in a valiant effort when finishing second in the Epsom Derby last time out.  The 1m4f trip looked to suit and the colt battled hard against Australia in the closing stages.  Any rain would certainly be welcomed and if the ground were to become really soft then I think this horse could get even closer to the favourite but, nonetheless he should find it difficult to reverse the Derby form whatever the conditions.

Aiden O’Brien has dominated this race in the modern era having trained the winner of the English/Irish Derby double three times, most impressively with Galileo in 2001.  His offspring AUSTRALIA (4/11 Betfred) was bred to win the Epsom Derby as a colt by Galileo out of Ouija Board and looks to emulate his father here.  After he put in a valiant effort in the 2000 Guineas, finishing a close third, he went two better and claimed the Derby prize emphatically.  Clearly a classy animal he’s justifiably a short price favourite for this race and it would take something special to beat him as he looks in a different league compared to the rest of the field.

O’Brien also runs Geoffrey Chaucer (20/1 SkyBet), Kingfisher (66/1 Ladbrokes) and Orchestra (33/1 William Hill), all horses who fell by the wayside in the Derby.  The first mentioned attracted a lot of support before finishing last of all at Epsom.  The other two runners performed well at Chester but also flopped in the Derby and they may well be entered here purely to guarantee an even gallop for their odds-on stablemate.

Dermot Weld has had a very impressive season to date and is represented here by Fascinating Rock (20/1 bet365).  This horse ran an average eighth at Epsom however that was his first attempt at the 1m4f trip and he should have learnt a lot from that effort.  That being said, he finished 11 lengths behind Australia and his best performances have come with cut in the ground so he could struggle.

This looks to be a pretty poor renewal of this race, largely because AUSTRALIA has scared the majority of his serious opposition away.  He’s a far superior horse on good ground than his rivals today and, providing a deluge of water doesn’t hit the track before post time, he should follow in his sire’s footsteps and complete the Derby double.  He’s understandably a short price, so it could be worth putting him in a straight forecast with Kingston Hill, who was second at Epsom but well ahead of the rest of the field.
