Watford v Man United betting tips:

Since making the step up to the Premier League, Quique Flores’ Watford side have equipped themselves extremely well. 16 points from their opening 12 games is a fair return, and it sees them occupy eleventh place, just a point behind Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side in tenth and level on goal difference with -1.

Watford have an extremely impressive record in the top flight at home as they do away from Vicarage Road, picking up eight points in each. However, last time they faced a big gun at home, Arsenal, The Hornets were comprehensively outclassed by three goals to nil.

Despite shipping three to the Gunners, Flores’ men have an impressive defensive record otherwise. The have conceded just 12 goals, which is the joint fifth best defensive record in the EPL.

For the most part, Watford’s defence has been extremely solid, with ex-Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes providing a frequently reliable stopper between the sticks. But, in his last outing against Leicester he dropped an absolute clanger, allowing Ngolo Kante’s extremely tame effort to squeeze beneath his body and roll staggeringly slowly into the unguarded net.

If this wasn’t bad enough, Gomes’ next involvement was to illegally halt the run of in-form workhorse Jamie Vardy whilst through on goal. The resultant penalty was coolly dispatched by the Englishman past the Brazilian to make sure of the victory for Leicester City.

Gomes has a history of dropping clangers, and it will be interesting to see how the Brazilian responds when faced with an inevitably tumultuous afternoon against a dominating Man United side.

Whilst United remain just two points off the top, they still remain an underwhelming side to watch. Granted, they usually dominate possession, but they fail consistently to carve out clear cut chances on-masse.

They played out three scoreless draws in a row prior to their wins against CSKA and West Brom. However tepid their build up play, one positive for Van Gaal is that United have not conceded a goal in 525 minutes of football.

Yet, whilst winning their last two, there’s always a sneaking suspicion that United will fail to find the net in almost every match they’ve played lately. Van Gaal has slightly tweaked his tactics to be a little more attacking, but even so, United still look like a team playing far below what their individual players are capable of.

Both teams have a relatively consistent record for playing out low scoring matches, and I think this one will only be decided by a few goals.
