The Travelers Championship 2014- Golf Betting Tips & Preview

Our man @chrismunney brings us his golf betting tips for this week's Travelers Championship, Good Luck all.

What an impressive performance from the German, Martin Kaymer this past week, an absolutely dominant victory over the field at Pinehurst. There was a lot of talk about the venue, but it looked like it held up well in my eyes. Only 3 men finished under par and for a course that has no rough, that says a lot. Kaymer seems to be a lock for yet another Ryder Cup team but I’m sure has his eyes the British Open next month. He’s half way to a career grand slam and he’s not even 30.

This week the TOUR heads the northeast United States. Connecticut to be exact at the TPC River Highlands course for this year’s Travelers Championship. The tournament has been around since 1952 and has been played at the TPC River Highlands since 1984 (even though it went by another name until 1991). There is tons of course data and some experience at this course really seems to play a factor in victories here.

TPC River Highlands is one of the shortest courses that the players will see all year long. The course measures just over 6,800 yards and plays to a par of 70. There are only 2 par 5’s on the course so players will have to really take advantage of the 48 par 4’s that they will see during the week. Ken Duke won this tournament last year in a playoff over Chris Stroud after some late heroics by the latter on the 18th. This wouldn’t have come to fruition if not for Bubba collapsing on the 16th hole and infamously berating his caddie afterwards. The last 4 winners have all picked up their 1st victory on TOUR here, let’s take a look.

Past Winners:

2013 – Ken Duke (-12)

2012 – Marc Leishman (-14)

2011 – Freddie Jacobson (-20)

2010 – Bubba Watson (-14)

2009 – Kenny Perry (-22)

Seeing that the course is so short, I think that leaves it wide open to both long hitters and shorter hitters as you can see from the past champions list. No stat really stands out when looking at the past tournaments here but scoring average does seem to be one of the more important stats. We will also look at birdie average as we can expect the winning score to be under par by at least double digits.

Bubba Watson to Win: 12/1 William Hill- Open a new William Hill account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Watson has a great track record here and is having his best year on TOUR. He ranks 3rd in birdie average and 4th in scoring average. He can simply overpower this course and without a late collapse, he would have 2 wins here already.

Keegan Bradley to Win: 25/1 Ladbrokes- Open a new Ladbrokes account by clicking this link, and get a £50 free bet!

Bradley is from the northeast and is rounding into some solid form. He has 2 top 10s in his last 5 starts this season including a 4th place finish last week at the US Open. He’s improved his standing each year at River Highlands and ranks 9th in birdie average.

Graham DeLaet e/w:  45/1 Bet365- Open a new Bet365 account and receive a 100% deposit bonus up to £200!

If DeLaet is going to pick up his first victory on TOUR, this would be the perfect venue. DeLaet is a great ball striker and should be able to hit almost every green here. His putting holds him back but he shouldn’t be scrambling for pars too often. He ranks 13th in scoring average and 22nd in Par 4 scoring.

Charley Hoffman e/w:  40/1 Coral- Open a new Coral account by clicking this link bet just £5 and get a free £20 bet!

Hoffman is playing really decent golf, making 9 cuts in a row on TOUR. He has two top 10’s in his last two starts here and seems to really like the setup. Hoffman ranks 6th in birdie average and 9th in Par 4 scoring.

Russell Knox e/w:  110/1 Skybet- Open a new SkyBET account by clicking this link and get a ‘Risk Free’ £30 bet.

Knox is another player looking to breakthrough but has the game to do so. Knox finished 13th here last year and is looking to improve upon that mark this week. Knox has missed his last 2 cuts but was playing pretty good golf before that. A week off last week may help him find his groove. Knox ranks 24th in scoring average and 22nd in Par 4 scoring.

Robert Streb e/w:  125/1 Betfred- Open a new Betfred account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Streb is another young player looking to shake things up on TOUR. He’s made 11/12 cuts this season and finished 2nd at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. A tournament in which he made a lot of birdies. Streb finished 58th in his first appearance here last year and should be able to build on that mark. Streb ranks 36th in scoring average and 2nd in Par 4 scoring.
