The Temple Stakes is run over the minimum trip of 5 furlongs and is now a staple of the Haydock Park racing fixture list after its move from Sandown Park in 2008.

Last season Sole Power (current favourite for this year’s renewal) was beaten by a neck by Bated Breath. Sole Power has already looked back to his best this season with a Palace House Stakes win under his belt and is the current 2/1 (Betfred) favourite for the race. Fran Berry will take the ride on Saturday and conditions look set to be ideal under foot for the favourite however his outside draw in stall 11 is a concern.

Since the Temple Stakes was been moved to Haydock in 2008, every winner has come from stalls 1-5, meaning Sole Power will have it all to do out in 11.

The second favourite for the race, Reckless Abandon (3/1 with William Hill) is more favourably drawn in stall 5. He is the only unbeaten horse in the field and has a Group One win under his belt as a juvenile, taking the Middle Park Stakes at the back end of last season. That Group One win gives him a penalty for this race, it is also the first time he has tackled the older horses.

Spirit Quartz (10/1 Betfred) has got the plumb draw in stall 1 and was far from disgraced in defeat last season including a defeat in the last 100 yards to Ortensia at York in the Nunthorpe. He ran fifth behind Sole Power in the Palace House Stakes earlier this season and his trainer Robert Cowell has said he looks in fantastic shape. At 10/1 he could be the each-way value in the race.
