Sunday Football Betting Tips

The bookies must be grinning from ear to ear this morning. Premier League defeats for both City and United would have busted many a Saturday afternoon football coupon up and down the land, whilst those punters looking to recover losses by betting on the evening's continental action will be licking their wounds this morning following Real Madrid's first home league defeat to city rivals Atletico since 1999. My own downfall was sealed before half-time yesterday having had Bournemouth marked down on several betting slips as a bit of a home banker against struggling Blackburn Rovers. I could not have been more wrong as Rovers sailed into a 3-0 half-time lead. That selection just about summed up my day betting-wise.

On to today's action and I'm optimistic that I can turn things round to end the weekend in profit. As usual there is a wealth of action from across the UK and European fixture list with plenty opportunities to bank some cash. Read on for my Sunday football predictions…

La Liga action gets underway at 11.00am BST as Osasuna host Levante in what could well be a pretty poor game with two out-of-form side facing each other. Osasuna have lost five of their opening six league matches, whilst visitors Levante have drawn four of their opening six. Two of Levante's four drawn matches have ended 0-0 and I am almost tempted to tip that scoreline in this fixture. However I will play safe and go for under 1.5 goals. Staying in La Liga, the other match that interests me is Espanyol's home fixture against Getafe. The hosts are unbeaten on their own turf in La Liga this season, with their only points dropped being a scoreless draw to Betis. Although Getafe will be buoyed by their midweek home victory over Celta Vigo, this trip to Espanyol is an altogether different test for a side who have lost all of their three away league matches this season. A comfortable home win for Espanyol is predicted.

Over in the Netherlands the pick of today's games is the Friesland derby between Heerenveen and Cambuur. Home side Heerenveen are the leading goalscorers in the Eredivisie, although in Cambuur they face a side who have kept clean sheets in their last three matches. That said I still think goals look likely with five of Heerenveen's seven league matches this season seeing at least five goals. Over 3.5 goals is my pick and rates as a confident selection.

Serie A can often prove to be a punters' graveyard with today's fixtures looking as difficult as ever to predict. Chievo's visit to Catania is the one match on the fixture list I am willing to have a bet on, given the poor run of form both sides are in. This match is unlikely to be vintage quality and could well end goalless. Backing 0-0 rarely seems to work for me though, so I will side with under 1.5 goals.

On more familiar territory to UK punters, Sky's Super Sunday sees Stoke host Norwich before managerless Sunderland host high-flying Liverpool in the pick of the day's matches. In the first match I cannot see past a home win for a Stoke side who continue to evolve and improve under Mark Hughes. The Potters' only defeats this season have been at the hands of Liverpool and Arsenal, and they should find little difficulty in disposing of a Norwich side who are struggling badly in front of goal and lacking confidence at the minute. Up in the North East, Liverpool will look to return to winning ways after their surprise defeat at home to Southampton last weekend. Sunderland's dreadful league form, leading to the sacking of Paulo Di Canio, will make many punters steam into an away win. However, free of the Di Canio shackles that were constraining the team, and the fact that Liverpool have failed to win in their last two visits to the Stadium of Light, I will swim against the tide and back Sunderland to gain a much-needed three points.
