Dawn Approach was to be given more time to recover from his Derby disappointment skipping Royal Ascot altogether, but in the past week he has pleased connections in his work and is now set to take his chance in this Group 1 event.
The St. James’ Palace Stakes for 3 year olds, raced over the mile trip features another short priced favourite for some to get stuck into on the first day. Dawn Approach (6/4 with Bet Victor) is now favourite for the race, partly down to a recent small setback to MAGICIAN (13/5 with Sporting Bet), the impressive winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas on his last start. The manner in which he won his race was the exciting thing and he ought to provide a stern test of Dawn Approach's credentials assuming all is well after the small setback.
We also have Toronado (4/1 with William Hill) in the race, though he was disappointing when coming up against Dawn Approach earlier in the year, in his first run in Group 1 company. There is likely to be much support with Hughes on board but I doubt he will turn over the aforementioned favourite even if he does return to his best form.
Mars (12/1 with Bet Victor) is another who will be looking to get involved here after a solid effort in the Derby. He stayed on to good effect that day and whilst the drop back to a mile isn not an obvious move on the back of that, he does not lack speed and could certainly pick up the pieces if any of the market principles fail to run up to form; that is entirely possible with some kind of nagging doubt over all of them.
