Southampton v Liverpool Betting Tips and Predictions

As the race for the Premier League title gathers pace, dark horses Liverpool head south for 'Saturday Night Football' on Sky Sports. They face this season's surprise package in Southampton and we have some free football betting tips for you. 

With Manchester City's cup commitments, three of the top four face away trips with a chance to put some distance between themselves and Manual Pellegrini's men. Arguably the most difficult on paper is Liverpool's visit to St Mary's where The Saints have been a tough nut to crack this year.

 However, treading water in mid table, Southampton are equally unlikely to be challenging the European places as much as they are the bottom three. A defeat last weekend to West Ham following an FA Cup exit to Sunderland, all hint towards a side running out of steam. Saturday evening's match is of far more importance to the team from Merseyside, and after making hard work beating Swansea last weekend, Liverpool now face back to back games on the road, with a trip to Manchester Untied looming on the horizon after Saturday's clash. If they want to be serious title contenders, a win against a Southampton is an absolute must. However, Brendon Rodgers' men did not find it easy against them earlier in the season where they inflicted Liverpool's only home defeat this year, albeit without Luis Suarez.

Browsing the early prices, Southampton can be backed at 11/4, which given Liverpool's kamikaze defending of late is not a bad shout. Being a home game though, the pressure will be on them to attack and this could certainly play into Liverpool's hands. It's not like he's turned into the village idiot overnight though, anyone taking pot shots from the half way line is clearly not short of confidence, you would certainly back him to put a decent chance away. On the flip side, Daniel Sturridge equalled Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of scoring eight games in a row last week, so he is the player in form. Something has to give with one of them, so this combined with the fact that Liverpool have the highest percentage in the division for scoring first at 74%, back Suarez or Sturridge to open the scoring at 11/8 with William Hill. Considering Suarez alone was fetching 13/8 earlier in the season, this is a decent price. 

Finally, for something to get the heart racing a little more, Ricky Lambert faces up against the team he's supported all his life. Just the player to ruffle the feathers of a fragile back line and with dead ball duties to boot, back him to score two or more goals with William Hill at 12/1 and be shown a card at 7/1 with Bet Victor.
