The St. James’ Palace Stakes for 3 year olds, raced over the mile trip features another short priced favourite for some to get stuck into on the first day. MAGICIAN is the even money favourite with Sky Bet at the moment after a very impressive victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas (beating Gale Force Ten also in the betting for this, although likely to run in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes over 7) at the Curragh. The manner in which he won his race was the exciting thing and is surely the one to beat here.

We also have Toronado (11/4 with Coral) in the race, though he was disappointing when coming up against Dawn Approach earlier in the year, in his first run in Group 1 company. There is likely to be much support with Hughes on board but I doubt he will turn over the aforementioned favourite even if he does return to his best form.

Garswood (16/1 with Coral) is another who will be looking to bounce pack after a modest effort in the Guineas, where he met some trouble in running but even without that was ultimately found wanting. He showed plenty of speed at certain stages of the race and the question remains as to whether he really is at his best over a mile.

For me, this could be another for favourite backers and Magician looks strong enough in this small (and getting smaller) field; I’d rather back Magician than lay him.
