Portugal v USA Betting Tips and Predictions

The second game for both these teams in Group G, Portugal meets the USA in Manaus on Sunday in the 11 o’clock kick off. The humidity and temperature at the Arena Amazonia, could well play a factor in what should be a close in encounter. Portugal where humbled in their first game against Germany, losing 4-0 to one of the pre-tournament favourites. They lost Pepe in that game for a foolish red card and will be without him for this fixture. I’m not convinced about goalkeeper Rui Patricio who I think could have done better with Muller’s second and third goals.

The USA were level for a total of just 4 minutes against Ghana. Clint Dempsey’s early strike settled the nerves and they responded well to Andre Ayew’s equaliser late in the second half, with substitute John Brooks restored their lead.

Klinsmann will be boosted by the return of Matt Besler at the heart of the defence as he looks to have overcome the injury he attained in the first game, his partnership with Stoke’s Geoff Cameron at the heart of the USA defence was one of the many positive to take out of the win against Ghana. Another boost is that Jozy Altidore’s hamstring injury doesn’t seem to be as bad as was first feared and he may yet feature in the tournament, although he’s unlikely to be fit for the Portugal game.

This game could determine who qualifies alongside Germany, with both sides expected to beat Ghana but lose against Germany. I think playing with 10 men in the heat against a ruthless German side will have taken a lot out of Portugal, the USA looked well organised and disciplined, they had plenty of energy and looked solid at the back.
