Belgium v Russia Betting Tips and Predictions

Group H big dogs Belgium and Russia square up in Rio on Sunday looking for the chance to put one foot into the knockout stages. Tune in to BBC 1 at 17:00 and here are some free World Cup 2014 betting tips.

Belgium's World Cup campaign got off to a winning start last week, albeit via an unconvincing performance against a spirited Algerian side. After falling behind before half-time, Marc Wilmots rang the changes and it was two of his substitutions that eventually made the difference as his team recovered to snatch a 2-1 victory. The result was harsh on Algeria but certainly highlighted the strength and depth of the Belgium squad.

Russia's World Cup also started unremarkably, slumping to a 1-1 draw with lowly South Korea in a truly dire affair which will have kept many of us up well after our bed time. In a game I enjoyed about as much as root canal, it took an absolute howler from Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev to gift the Koreans a goal. Such was the ineptitude of the error, one has to wonder if he actually had a bet on Lee Keun-Ho to score first.

Bookmakers have Belgium as even money favourites, with Russia 10/3 outsiders. The draw, however, is a well priced 13/5 which is certainly worth some serious consideration. Given that Russia dropped points in their opening match though, I would expect Fabio Capello's men to be far more adventurous this time round which may well play into Belgium's hands. Therefore back Belgium to win at even money with Bet365 and the match to be a draw at half-time and Belgium to be winning at full-time available at 15/4 with the same bookmaker. Bet365 have a promotion running that refunds in the event of a 0-0 'bore draw'.

Moving on, judging by the fact Russia's last five matches have been under 2.5 goals along with two of Belgium's last three, Sunday's match is likely to be an excellent candidate in the under 2.5 market. However, at a mere 8/11, it's a bit of a measly bet. Consequently, I've been browsing some of the promotions once again, and similarly to that of Bet365, Betfred also offer refunds in the event of a draw – In this case if the match ends one apiece. That particular scoreline is in fact the second favourite in the correct score market, so why not have a punt on a scoreline with a 2-0 Belgium win superbly priced at 9/1 and still under 2.5 goals.

Finally for a bit of a longshot, with Igor Akinfeev's calamity still fresh in his memory, expect Belgium to be firing in pot shots from all angles. Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen got himself forward several times against Algeria and even got first dibs on a couple of free kicks. An 11/1 shot with Ladbrokes, back him to notch anytime in the game
