Newcastle United vs Sunderland – An Unlikely Victory For The Black Cats?

Sunday lunchtime sees the North East derby take place between Newcastle host Sunderland, in what is a must-win game for both teams as they attempt to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Newcastle start as even money favourites to win the match with Betfred, Sunderland can be backed at 16/5 with BetVictor, whilst the draw is available at 12/5 with Ladbrokes.

Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United lie in 13th placed in the league table, five points ahead of the bottom three and are by no means yet guaranteed of Premier League survival.  The home support will demand a victory on Sunday, and if the Magpies are to deliver that then they will need to complete a feat not seen at St James’ Park since 2006; and that is to win five consecutive top-flight home matches.

Paul Di Canio and his side make the short trip to St James’ Park knowing that defeat will leave them in real danger of relegation.  Sunderland lie third from bottom of the table on equal points with Wigan Athletic, who are of course the league’s perennial escape artists.  Sunderland last won a league match back on 19th January and with the manager knowing that he has to make a big, bold and fast impact on his side, it would be no surprise to see Sunderland start the match at full throttle and try and shock Newcastle with an early goal.

A look at recent encounters between Newcastle and Sunderland throws up some interesting statistics:

  • Four of their last six meetings have ended 1-1
  • Five of their last six meetings have gone under 2.5 goals
  • Both teams have scored in eight of their last ten meetings
  • Four of their last five meetings have seen red cards shown

Whilst some punters will fancy getting stuck in to a low-scoring home win or draw, I fancy a bit of an upset in this one.  Yes, my best bet is Sunderland to win at 16/5, and I will also be recommending the 2-1 correct score in favour of the visitors.  My rationale is that a draw is of little use to either side so expect both sets of players to go hammer and tongs for the three points.  Also, Newcastle are going for an unlikely fifth home win on the bounce, whilst at some point Sunderland’s poor run of form has to come to an end, and there is no better place for that to happen than at the home of their most bitter rivals.
