Horse racing tips and advice for the best bets on Day 5 of the Punchestown Festival.

The fantastic racing action continues on the final day of the Punchestown Festival. With two Grade 1’s on the card, along with a number of competitive handicaps, it looks to be an exciting finale to what has been an intriguing and entertaining five day’s of racing.

The first Grade 1 of the day is the Mares Champion Hurdle, where Cheltenham World Hurdle runner up, ANNIE POWER (1/5 William Hill) heads the field. Having been unsuccessful at Cheltenham, connections will be aiming to end the mares’ season on a high.  After failing at 3m, she’s back in trip today and is also back facing her own sex in what, on paper at least, appears a fairly straightforward task.  Her main rival looks to be Cockney Sparrow (7/1 bet365), a horse who was a faller when in behind Annie Power at Doncaster earlier this season.  She took a huge scalp on her latest start at Ayr when pouncing on Champion Hurdle runner-up My Tent Or Yours to win the Scottish Champion Hurdle and on that form has to be respected.  Another notable entrant is Glen’s Melody (10/1 bet365) who ran well for a long way when finishing fourth behind Jetson, Quevega and At Fishers Cross on Thursday.  She races over a shorter distance here and, if she can find the form she showed at Cheltenham, when second behind Quevega, she could also be a danger.

In the Champion 4 year-old hurdle, 13 go to post, and you could make a case for the majority of them.  TIGER ROLL (11/4 bet365) attempts to add his name to the list of horses who have won at both the Punchestown and Cheltenham Festivals.  The Gordon Elliott trained juvenile was a very impressive winner of the Triumph Hurdle on just his third start over obstacles and looks open to plenty of improvement.  Arguably this is the most competitive Grade 1 of the whole week as a large proportion of the Triumph Hurdle field re-oppose one another.  Elliott decided to give Aintree a swerve to keep Tiger Roll fresh for this, and in his absence the consistent Dessie Hughes-trained Guitar Pete (11/2 William Hill) took the spoils on Merseyside.  John Quinn's Pearl Castle (20/1 William Hill) looked good at Doncaster on two occasions earlier in the year, but possibly found the stiff nature of the Cheltenham track beyond him in the Triumph.  Kentucky Hyden (11/2 bet365) and Royal Irish Hussar (12/1 William Hill) are both trained by Nicky Henderson, with Barry Geraghty choosing the former.  Willie Mullins is also double-handed with Abbyssial (8/1 bet365), who fell in the Triumph, and the mare ADRIANA DES MOTTES (10/1 William Hill). Of the two I like the latter as an each-way bet.  She has done little wrong since arriving in Ireland, from France, and was unlucky at Cheltenham when brought down by her stable mate.

My final bet of the Festival comes in the Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase where I really like the look of CHARTREUX (8/1 bet365) for Tom George and Tom Scudamore.  With a winner under his belt already this week, it’s worth keeping an eye on George’ horses, and as he is still on a reasonable mark, he looks a major contender.  He jumped well and stayed on well last time out with a decisive win at Sandown and should go well here.
