Horse racing betting tips for the 3.50pm Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

This weekend the British flat season really comes to life with Newmarket hosting the two-day Guineas meeting!  The 206th running of the 2,000 Guineas is the star attraction on Saturday and promises to be one of the strongest renewals in recent memory.  Run over 1m on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course, this race represents the first real test of how well last season's leading 2 year-olds have developed and matured over the winter.  Steeped in history, 14 runners contest this year’s contst hoping to emulate some of the greats that have gone before them.

The obvious starting point is the current market leader – Kingman (13/8 Betfred).  Carrying the familiar silks of K Abdullah, most notably known thanks to the exploits of Frankel, is certainly a burdensome task for any horse, but especially a horse with Classic aspirations.  Nevertheless, Kingman rose to the challenge and, after winning his maiden in impressive fashion, he completed his two year-old campaign claiming the Group 3 Solario Stakes.  He retuned this season in the Greenham and fully established himself as a leading light in the 2,000 Guineas market.  He comfortably accounted for a good quality field and looked impressive both with his cruising speed and turn of foot.  Question marks have arisen over his suitability towards truly fast ground (had an operation late in his 2 year-old season and has a quirk in his action) so a slight degree of caution must be noted considering the state of the ground.  However, from what we have seen on the track, he is a fantastic equine specimen and should run a big race providing he is not overly disadvantaged by the conditions.

Hot on the hoofs of the aforementioned horse is the first string of Ballydoyle – Australia (10/3 Coral).  This horse has been subject to some seriously strong reports coming from Ireland, with his trainer declaring him as potentially the best horse he’s ever trained.  Thats quite an accolade for O’Brien to bestow when you consider he has won this race on four occasions since 2004, with the likes of George Washington, Henrythenavigator and Camelot.  With the advantage of sectional timings on his gallops O’Brien certainly has the statical analysis to back up such a claim, but is the hype going to win this horse the race?  At his current price he looks plenty short enough for what he has achieved on the track and I wouldn’t be tempted to get involved.  If he wins and his trainer is vindicated then fair enough, chalk that one up to experience, however, as a form student I can’t be with him.

Far more interesting is the challenge posed by the supposed second string – War Command (9/1 Ladbrokes).  Winner of the both the Coventry and the Dewhurst as a 2 year-old he looked a little unsuited by the good to soft ground on his last start at Newmarket.  Despite only winning by just over a length, he beat Outstrip who went on to win the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf so the form certainly looks strong.  With the ground good-to-firm and a large field size, conditions should suit and he should be seen to best effect here.  Some may well question his ability to see out a truly run 1m, considering he won the Coventry so spectacularly, however his pedigree gives plenty of reason for optimism.  His latent speed could see him well placed throughout and, providing his stamina lasts, he is certainly a major contender.

Richard Hannon will be looking to claim this year’s contest after being a little unfortunate with his representative for last years race – Toronado.  He fields last year’s leading juvenile colt, TOORMORE (8/1 Betfred).  Unbeaten in his first season he claimed victory in both the Vintage and National stakes.  He made his reappearance in the Craven Stakes and continued his unbeaten run, beating the likes of The Grey Gatsby and Be Ready.  Undoubtedly he didn't look as spectacular as the market leader Kingman did in his trial, but Toormore did show some good resolve and determination in a small field race which tactically did not suit his running style.  Similarly to the majority of horses in this field, he will be suited by a strong pace to run at and should be able to use his stamina to full effect.  Considering the undulations of the course, winning over C&D is a huge advantage, one of which could make all the difference.  He may not be as flashy as some of his rivals but he has very strong claims.

In a renewal as competitive as this, plenty look to have claims and of those – Kingston Hill (12/1 SkyBet) claimed an impressive victory in the Racing Post Trophy and has to be respected.  Noozhoh Canarias (20/1 SkyBet) was the subject of support after being tipped ante-post by Pricewise and is held in high regard back in his homeland.  Outstrip (28/1 William Hill) represents Godolphin who won last year’s contest with Dawn Approach and who arrive here hoping the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf winner can make it back-to-back 2,000 Guineas victories.

A lot will depend on the state of the ground come post time I fear.  Connections of Kingman are planning to walk the course before racing in order to establish whether or not their star horse will run.  If they deem the ground acceptable then, on form, I think he will take all the beating and more.  Not only did he look so visually impressive when winning the Greenham, but he also looked progressive and should well improve for the step up to 1m.  However, although I cant see past him, his price is short enough considering how competitive the contest is.  In terms of a bet in the race, TOORMORE looks good value for those wanting an each-way selection.  His form last year looks solid and his performance on his reappearance was really encouraging.  It is the mould for the Hannon stable to run their horses in trials and the Craven Stakes could well have put the finishing touches to Toormore’s preparations for the 2,000 Guineas.
