Football betting tips for Chelsea v Southampton

With a defeat to his former side Porto on Tuesday, and overseeing the worst start to a League campaign since forever, Jose Mourinho is unquestionably under pressure going into Chelsea’s clash with Ronald Koeman’s plucky Saints on Saturday.

It’s difficult to see how Chelsea are going to pull themselves out of this slump. After three straight victories, it looked like they had turned the corner, but a 2-2 draw against an average Newcastle team and a midweek defeat to FC Porto has put pay to any recovery.

They are already 8 points off top spot, and with their players seemingly nowhere near top form, The Blues look an absolute shadow of last season’s title winning team.

Whilst Chelsea’s attack certainly hasn’t been at its sharpest so far, it’s The Blues’ defence which has exposed a gaping frailty. John Terry was for so long a leader and a rock at the heart of Mourinho’s defence. However, it’s safe to say that his best days are behind him and Chelsea need to find a replacement in January.

Kurt Zouma has shown brief glimpses of quality but still lacks the consistency needed to compete for major honours. His unfathomable decision to leave a cross for Branislav Ivanovic to deal with against Newcastle let Magpies’ striker Ayoze Perez in for the chance that opened the scoring.

Young defenders need time to learn from their mistakes, but frankly, Chelsea cannot afford any more.

It’s not just the young guns in defence that are under-performing. From being one of the best full backs in the League last season, Ivanovic has shown an obvious naivety this term. Whether it’s the lack of an organising leader at the back remains to be seen.

The transfer window is closed and Chelsea have to make do with what they’ve got. In my opinion, despite his obvious decline in pace, Chelsea still need Terry’s leadership at the back.

Southampton showed against Man United that they have the capability to cut it with the big boys in front of their home fans. However, they haven’t been so great on their travels this season, managing 3 draws with Newcastle, Watford and West Brom.

I don’t expect Mourinho to bring John Terry back into his team, and even if he did, I think Chelsea are going to concede. As is becoming customary with Chelsea fixtures this season, I am going to put my money on both teams scoring.

My first of my football betting tips for Chelsea v Southampton is for both teams to score. Odds of 5/6 can be found with Skybet.

I can’t see Southampton winning the game, however. I think Chelsea’s poor form will continue and I think the most likely result is a score draw.

My second of my football betting tips for Chelsea v Southampton is for the game to finish as a draw. Odds of 27/10 can be found with Coral

I can see Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane causing havoc with Chelsea’s already fragile defence, and I think that they will be able to notch at least one goal. Mourinho’s team will fight back, like they did last weekend, and I can see them contesting a riveting and highly entertaining score-draw.

The third of my football betting tips for Chelsea v Southampton is for the game to finish 2-2. Odds of 16/1 can be found with Bet365
