Epsom Oaks Tips: Three Horses that Could Win the Oaks at Epsom

With this year’s Oaks lining up many top horses it is sure to be an excellent annual renewal for the “Fillies Derby”. Last year saw AP O’brien steal the spoils with a 20/1 outsider in WAS.

Maybe we will find a potential outsider again this year, or will the class of the favourites come to the fore?

Ralph Beckett’s entry leads the current betting market and not without too much surprise after its 10l victory at Lingfield’s Oaks Trial a couple of weeks back. There were many positives to come out of this, for example, she stays the trip without any doubt at all and also, she won on the bridle going away further from the field! Ralph Beckett also has previous with this Epsom classic, having won the race in 2008 with Look Here. Although it was a more than convincing victory in the Oaks Trial for Secret Gesture, she will be up against a lot of better quality opposition this time out and sometimes races are run against specific horses so this horses is by no means the given winner.

AP O’brien sends this horse to the Oaks on the back of an impressive, but frustrating race at Newmarket coming up 2l short of SKY LANTERN but running on very strongly indeed. From the outset of that race, Moth was raced in the wrong position leaving her with many horses to pass (which she did, bar the front 2), however, if ran in a better position in the Oaks I see no reason for it not to come up trumps.

This horse is my actual pick for the race, because it’s a very strong Filly, who will battle all the way to the finish and who will definitely stay the trip without any problems at all.  If anything, having run on soft ground at Newmarket it will benefit Moth even more because it has so much raw speed when asked to pick up the predicted drying ground for Epsom will definitely help. However, at the same time, if it’s soft, she is more than capable.  I think this is the horse built ready for the Oaks, and this is my pick.

Current best price: 3/1 with Paddy Power (bet £10 get £20 free)

Now this is an interesting horse, with it being Ralph Beckett’s second horse in this race but at a much much bigger price. Talent is what it says it is, a talent. It has won 2 from 3 starts, sticking on gamely to the line on both occasions. Having seen those two victories I had earmarked her for the Oaks because of its ability to keep on finding a little bit more towards the line. Interestingly, Ralph Beckett believes this is a better chance than Secret Gesture (maybe a tactical ploy). Here is what he told the Racing Post. “Talent is the much more finished article, she’s a tough, hard filly and ground it out at Newmarket. I think she will go to Epsom no problem and will handle the day. Interesting stuff.
