Epsom Derby 2013 Tips: Three Horses That Could Win the Derby

Dawn Approach 2.jpg

The year round Epsom derby Classic arrives again with more than enough hype, with some outstandingly good horses coming to test their hooves over the 1m 4f trip.

Last years odds-on favourite CAMELOT completed the Epsom double for AP O’brien but that looks unlikely this year with another odds-on favourite stealing the headlines.

If favourite Dawn Approach wins the Derby Bet Victor will refund losing bets on all other horses – bet with Bet Victor here.

DAWN APPROACH

Well, what is there to say about this horse? Beaten everything that’s been put in front of it handsomely, with the exception of his last outing. Jim Bolger has certainly got this horse in tip-top condition coming into this having won the 2000 Guineas beating what was a much fancied TORONADO on the day. It’s just very hard to put anything against this horse as it has a superb record, however, I do have only one doubt. The trip. To me, although it got the mile in the 2000 Guineas and won by 5l I wasn’t convinced it would stop the 1m 4f as horses were gaining on him. That is my only doubt and with horses who are guaranteed to get the trip I can see a few tense faces approaching the finish line.

OCOVANGO

Here is an interesting proposition. The only horse in the field, we don’t have “form” to go by. This horse has also, beaten everything it has faced as of yet and has long been spoken about for running this race. However, it is coming to the UK and after-all we don’t really know a lot about it or who it has run against. It won its last race by half a length over 1m 2f however that doesn’t do this horse justice because it ran on superbly up the straight and never looked like losing and looked like it could do the 1m 4f trip here without issue. Now, if the form he has in France matches over here, then it will most certainly go close in this race. Interesting proposition this one.

RULER OF THE WORLD

Here is a horse who is going very much under the radar here because AP O’brien has a few runners in this race. It would have been easy for me to write up about Battle of Marengo after his impressive performance last time out. However, Ruler of the World got me to the edge of my seat with his last performance, something that doesn’t happen very often. Chester is a well renown tough racecourse to deal with, with the sharp left leading onto the straight and the old myth about where your horse is drawn will win you the race. However, none of this phased this horse and it was very businesslike with Ryan Moore on board. Travelled smoothly throughout and sprinted away from the field like I haven’t seen in a while going on by 6l to victory. Immediately after the race, I placed a bet on this horse for the Derby, because it was that impressive. Some might say “yes, but he hasn’t really beaten anyone”, well the same applies to most of the field with the exception of Dawn Approach. This is my bet for the Derby, and it has good each-way value too.

In conclusion, i’m sure this will be a genuine Classic (as ever) and there are many possibilities and theories as to who might win or should win, but that is Classics for you, nobody really knows! My pick is Ruler of the World at 10/1 and if it runs, my each way bet will be FLYING THE FLAG at 40/1."Talent is much more of the finished article. She's a tough, hardy filly and ground it out at Newmarket. I think she will go round Epsom no problem and will handle the day," the trainer told At The Races.

"It would be churlish of me to suggest there is nothing between them. Secret Gesture has always shown a bit more than Talent at home, but that doesn't always make the difference.

"Epsom is unique and it isn't always the brilliant workhorse that wins the race. It's the one that handles the place best and I hope they are able to do that."
