England won the fourth test and the Ashes series at Durham after an inspirational performance from Stuart Broad in the Australia second innings.  The match was evenly poised after the first innings with Australia holding a slim lead of 32 runs. England were mediocre with the bat in their first innings with Alastair Cook the only player to make a half century (51). In the second innings, Ian Bell made his third century of the series with a 113 but other than that it was a fairly poor batting performance from England. It’s a stunning achievement for Bell who will surely be named player of the series. With the ball England performed reasonably well. Stuart broad performed brilliantly for England taking 5 wickets in the first innings followed by 6 in the second. Broad was the obvious star of the test but Tim Bresnan also bowled very well across the four days and deserves credit for the England win. England must improve on their batting if they are to complete the sweep of the Aussies but if they bowl like they did at Durham then they will put themselves in with a great chance. Simon Kerrigan and Chris Woakes have been added to the squad for the final test match and will be hoping to make an impact if they get the chance.

Australia looked certain to win the test but a collapse from the batsmen, along with some brilliant bowling turned the tables in England’s favour.  Australia’s first innings contained an impressive century from opener Chris Rogers but after that only four players made it in to double figures for runs. Shane Watson made 68 but it was a disappointing score for the Aussies considering Rogers’ score. The second innings was a huge disappointment for Australia. Chasing 299 for victory, the visitors got off to a brilliant start with an opening partnership of 109 and the Aussies looked in brilliant shape to win the test. However, the middle order collapsed and the tail-enders were unable to save them and the test slipped away from them. Stuart Broad took 6 of the final 7 wickets and was brilliant but Australia will be gutted they didn’t achieve the 299. It was a tough target to chase down but after the opening partnership, they would have expected to win.  Ryan Harris was the pick of the bowlers, taking 9 in total for the test including 7 in the second innings but other than that Australia’s bowling was nothing special. They will need to improve in all areas if they are to win the final test but they’ve came close in the last two tests so they will be confident they can go one better and win the final test in the series.
