The OLGB Mares Handicap Hurdle looks to be a competitive handicap contest with 20 good quality runners heading to post. In what looks to be a thoroughly open race there are more than a handful of runners in with decent chances.

Last time out, trainer Kim Bailey booked the expertise of AP McCoy on MISS PEACHEY (25/1 William Hill), in a Mares' Hurdle Finale at Newbury, but she ran a disappointing race, finishing last. The jockey booking was certainly eye catching but unfortunately on the day the plan didn't work, and to me the horse seemed to be unsuited by AP’s aggressive riding style and that may have hindered her chances. Prior to that performance, her form looked solid and a return to that will see her go very well. The handicapper has seemingly relented a little and back on better ground (where all her best form has come on) she looks an interesting bet. To me she seems to thrive in Spring conditions when the sun is on her back and the ground is drying, and I think this race will suit her well.

L’Unique (8/1 bet365) carries top weight but finished an eye-catching third behind Quevega at the Cheltenham Festival. She looks to be the main danger in this race with her strong Cheltenham form and with Alan King’s yard in good form.

Fourth behind Quevega, finished the Tim Vaughan trained Hidden Identity (11/1 bet365), which was a bit of a surprise at a big price. Until then, Vaughan had been going through a quiet patch, but his yard is looking a lot stronger now and a repeat of that form could see this mare going very close.

There are a number of mares who could well claim this prize and with that in mind I’ve decided to look for a bit of each-way value. Although MISS PEACHEY is yet to encounter the unique demands of Cheltenham, she has the ground conditions to suit and should go well at a big price.
