World Cup Best Bets – Monday 16th June

Germany v Portugal 5PM GMT

We begin in Group G and one of the stand out matches of the whole group stage as one of the tournament favorites Germany take on Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Both sides are part of Europe’s elite and Germany are especially strong, even without the injured Marco Reus. Podolski and Schurrle have impressed of late and Germany finished their preparations with a 6-1 win against lowly Armenia, part of an 11 match unbeaten run.

There is only one name to talk about for Portugal and that is Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid superstar. He is a slight injury doubt in this one and getting out of the group for them may rely on him being fit. They finished their tournament preparations by beating Ireland 5-1, with Hugo Almeida scoring twice. They are currently on an 8 game unbeaten run and have lost just one of their last fifteen games – away to Brazil.

This could be another great game in a World Cup already full of goals and both of these sides know how to find the net. Germany have only failed to score in one of their last 43 matches, a stunning record. 11 of their last 15 have seen over 2.5 goals and they do concede – 3 goals in their last two friendlies show that.

Portugal are no slouches in front of goal either, they have scored fourteen goals in their last five matches but kept just five clean sheets in twelve qualifying matches with the likes of Luxembourg breaching their defence.

Over 2.5 goals is Evens with Ladbrokes and with teams going for it at this World Cup and two of the best attacking lineups about in this one, this seems a good safe bet.

Iran v Nigeria 8PM GMT

Monday’s second fixture features slightly less prestigious names but both sides will fancy their chances of maybe getting out of a tight group F.

Iran are well disciplined if not spectacular under Carlos Quieroz and finished about South Korea in qualifying for this World Cup. They make up for their lack of ability going forward with a good defensive organization – something rarely seen at this World Cup so far. They have conceded just one goal in their last four matches – two of these ending 0-0. The final qualifying groups saw them concede just twice in 8 matches – They finished with 6 clean sheets and two one nil defeats.

Nigeria perhaps have higher hopes for getting out of the group but were unimpressive as they lost 2-1 to USA in their final friendly. In their final qualifying group they conceded just three goals though and scored just seven in their six matches. None of their games had more than two goals, this could be the match to end the exciting World Cup start.

It seems clear there won’t be many goals here if the two sides set up how they did in qualifying. Under 2.5 goals offers little value though, go for under 1.5 goals at 21/10 with Coral.

Ghana v USA 11PM GMT

The night wraps up with the underdogs in Group G USA taking on Quarter Finalists from four years ago Ghana.

The Ghanaians come in to this on the back of an encouraging 4-0 win over South Korea. Ghana romped here in qualifying, winning five and losing one of their group matches, with Asamoah Gyan top scoring in qualifying. They averaged three goals a game in qualifying and could push Portugal all the way.

The USA have very different ambitions, despite finishing top of a poor North American qualifying group. They have shown good form since then winning their last three matches but are still expected to finish rock bottom here.

I like this Ghana team with plenty of pace in attack while USA have Jozy Altidore in attack, Ghana are 8/5 to win with Ladbrokes and are one of the stronger African sides here so looks a good shout.
