First of all we need to cast an eye over previous winners – 2010 was won by Diego Forlan, 2006 by Zinedine Zidane, 2002 by Oliver Kahn, 1998 by Ronaldo, 1994 by Romario and so on. His Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi is certainly worth a look though. 8/1 isn’t a massive price but if Argentina are to be successful, he will be key. Despite injuries this season he has scored over 40 goals and he offers so much more than that to any side he plays in. Argentina seem to have a good squad this time around and not jus a good attack so if they do well, Messi is bound to impress and with the name he has, he could be on course for the award.

Finally, an option for Spain. This sometime perhaps has a bit of a sympathetic angle to it, with the likes of Zidane and Kahn winning the prize at their last World Cup. One man who will probably be playing in his is Xavi. The Barcelona man is still great on the ball and if Spain win, his role at the heart of midfield will of course be vital.
