Uruguay vs Italy Match Preview and Betting Tips

Today brings to a close the Confederations Cup with Brazil hosting Spain in the final at 11.00pm BST and you can read our preview of that game here. Prior to that, however, the third / fourth placed play-off takes place at 5.00pm BST as Uruguay and Italy face each other in what should be enthralling game of football.

Uruguay are marginal favourites to win the match at 7/5, Italy can be backed at 9/5, whilst the draw is available at 12/5. All odds quoted are with Ladbrokes.

After losing out on a place in the final after going down to a late Brazil goal, Uruguay will be hoping they can end the tournament on a high by recording a victory over Italy. The South Americans have a full squad from which to choose and the goal threat is likely to once again come from Cavani and Suarez.

Italy can count themselves extremely unlucky not to have booked a place in the final, having passed up numerous chances against Spain during open play before eventually losing 7-6 on penalties. With Mario Balotelli already out and Alberto Gilardino carrying an injury from the defeat to La Roja, the Azzurri's goalscoring responsibility could lie solely with the exciting Stephan El Shaarawy. Like their South American opponents, Italy will want to end the tournament on a high but they may struggle against a Uruguay outfit who have had a day's extra recovery time.

The 7/5 available for Uruguay to win looks fair and that is a suggested starting point for a bet. I don't expect the South Americans to keep a clean sheet, but at 8/13 the price on both teams to score is too short for me to consider. If El Shaarawy does start he is bound to be popular in the scorer markets and at 11/4 anytime he could be worth considering. However Andrea Pirlo, who already has one goal and one assist in this tournament, is a whopping 5/1 with BetVictor to score anytime and that is where my money is going.
