U.S OPEN 2014 Golf Betting Tips – Editors Long Shots

Here we go, the second major of the year starts on Thursday in North Carolina, with many of the world’s top players in great form is should be a fantastic event over the Pinehurst No 2 course.  With the form of Scott, Mcilroy et al it would be easy to just pick out some players from the top of the market; but in this article I will look to provide some EW (most bookies paying 6 places!) or Top 10 plays which could keep your interest if your Win plays bomb out early on!  Enjoy.

The Course

What should we expect this week?  Well, a long redesigned Par 70 layout with significantly less rough than a standard US Open, in its place are some fantastic run off areas around the greens which can see the ball run a good 50 yards away down the fairway, if you slightly miss hit or misplace your approach.  If you add to this a weather forecast of 50% chance of rain each day and scattered thunderstorms throughout it suggests- a) that having some distance from the tee will be an advantage, especially when you consider the accuracy needed on approach shots to hold the greens , b) An ability to react well to delays and distractions could be useful.  The main feature of the course is the ‘upturned saucer’ greens, this will mean those run off areas mentioned earlier will likely play a big part in proceedings.

For my long shots below I have tried to pick out some players who have the type of game to allow them a reasonable chance of sneaking us a top 10 minimum, bear in mind there is plenty of risk with these plays, but just 1 top 10 finish should cover our bets if you were to bet 1 point on top 10 and ½ point EW.  One other thing of note before we crack on with the selections, this same course hosts the U.S Women’s Open next week, so keep that in mind while watching this week to help you decipher who will take honours next week.

Long Shots

Victor Dubuisson – 9/1 Top 10 or 100/1 EW- Skybet- Open a new SkyBET account by clicking this link and get a ‘Risk Free’ £30 bet.

Second last time out after losing in a play-off to Jaidee in the Nordea Masters, Dubuisson has great power and a fine short game, something he proved with his miraculous up and downs against Jason Day in the WGC Match play where he finished runner up.  Very lightly raced this season due to another injury, but that performance in Sweden was excellent and if his iron game is sharp enough he could be in good shape for a Top 10.

Jamie Donaldson- 10/1 Top 10 or 125/1 EW- Betfred- Open a new Betfred account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Form has dropped off a bit after a hot start to the season, Donaldson should be a good match for the course, he has a solid all round game and is an excellent scrambler (ranked 11th over last 6 months on European tour) which could be of great benefit on these upturned, tough greens.  He is also a long and relatively accurate driver of the ball, if he can hit enough greens as not to put undue pressure on his scrambling, he might just deliver for us.

Stephen Gallacher- 11/1 Top 10 or 140/1 EW- Bet365- Open a new Bet365 account and receive a 100% deposit bonus up to £200!

Finished runner up alongside Dubuisson in the Nordea last time out and preceded that with a 5th place finish, therefore carries in great form.  Statistically he looks the best bet of these 4 to make his mark here, a long driver who also ranks nicely in GIR and Scrambling, also getting more and more comfortable playing in the States/WGC events after a fine run of form over the last couple of years.  An excellent statistical match and carrying in form and confidence, this is my strongest selection for my long shots.

Angel Cabrera- 12/1 Top 10 or 150/1 EW- William Hill- Open a new William Hill account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Forget form when it comes to the big man, Angel oozes natural ability and won the U.S Open in 2007, followed that up with the 2009 Masters and only lost out in a playoff to Adam Scott in the 2013 Masters, if he gets confident then look out!  This is most definitely the Boom or Bust selection from these 4, could just as easily shoot 80, 80 as play his way into contention; we will likely know by Thursday Evening whether it’s boom or bust, but not someone to underestimate.

Notable Mentions

A couple of notable mentions before I finish, no Americans selected above; this is only because I found what I consider better value on my 4 selections BUT, I did like the look of Matt Every (125/1 various) who finished 3rd last week and plays Par 70 courses well, and Bill Haas (80/1 various) who also plays tough layouts well.

Regardless of whom you plump for this week, best of luck all and let’s hope for a great event.
