The Cheltenham Festival opens on Tuesday 11th March 2014 with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (1.30pm) and we have got the best free Cheltenham tips for the opening race of the Festival.

The curtain raiser of the Cheltenham Festival is the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Irving is the current favourite in the latest betting odds following his most recent victory.

Some bookmakers price both Irving and our long term ante-post selection Vatour at the head of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting odds, with Betfred offering 3/1 about each of them.

German bred Irving will be a leading Cheltenham Festival fancy for trainer Paul Nicholls and the unbeaten hurdling star shot to the head of the market after his dominant success in the Dovecote.  A very strong traveller with the ability to quicken, he has progressed well and reamins unbeaten over hurdles since arriving from Germany.

While Nicholls may have the market leader, Nicky Henderson will be looking to break his duck in the race.  The Tolworth 1-2 for the trainer has put Josses Hill (12/1 Sky Bet)  in the shakeup for the 2014 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

In the same breath, the Tolworth was a bitter disappointment for The Liquidator (25/1 bet365) who conceded his first loss over hurdles and could only manage fifth.  David Pipe’s charge still merits respect despite the result as many feel that the run was too poor to be true.

While the English contingent warrant respect, the strongest challengers arguably reside in Ireland.  In terms of a Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting tip we are siding with second favourite VAUTOUR (3/1 Betfred) who has emerged in recent weeks as a credible selection with the requisite speed needed to win this prize.  He was shortened promptly after pulling 11 lengths clear with Pat Fahy’s Western Boy in a novice hurdle at Punchestown and shot to favouritism with a win at Leopardstown before Irving’s success in the Dovecote.  His success at Punchestown was a particualrly impressive piece of form as the horse back in third was rated 132 over hurdles.

Stablemate, Valseur Lido (16/1 Coral) has shortened in the Supreme betting slightly but is a remarkably difficult horse to assess as Davy Russell just ushered him over the line in a novice hurdle at Navan over 2 miles.  The Mullin’s contenders are quite unexposed as racing goes, last year’s winner for the stable, Champagne Fever, raced 8 times prior to going Cheltenham and tellingly had course form from the Champion Bumper the year earlier, just to add context, Vautour has had just four starts.

While there are still unknown quantities in the betting it is probably best to side with a horse that has shown the best literal form over 2m for our Cheltenham Supreme Novices Hurdle prediction and the requisite speed and toughness to win a race of this calibre.  The Irish have a great record in this race so VAUTOUR gets the nod.
