Royal Ascot day 2 Betting Tips
2.30pm – Dutch Connection (each-way).
The Jersey Stakes kicks us off and Ivawood will likely be a short-priced favourite. In terms of value, I like Dutch Connection each-way. Charlie Hills' charge was a bold winner of the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York last season where he travelled beautifully into the race and then ran just two-and-a-half lengths behind Gleneagles in the Group 1 Vincent O'Brien Stakes at the Curragh. He made his seasonal reappearance in the 2000 Guineas and finished a respectable seventh and should come on plenty from the run.
3.05pm – Besharah.
The Queen Mary Stakes is next up and the William Haggas-trained Besharah is the pick. She's already a winner at Ascot having won her maiden at the course before going on to land a Windsor contest with minimal fuss. The form has worked out well from that effort after the second has went on to win and Haggas is a genius of a handler to improve his horse's from one run to the next.
3.40pm – Bragging.
Integral won this contest last year and she will take a lot of beating. However, at even money I'd rather look for a horse at better value. Sir Michael Stoute also saddles Bragging who looks a shade over-priced. The daughter of Exchange Rate was one of the most progressive horses in training last season and many predicted she would be continue to improve this term. She made her seasonal reappearance in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket in April and was an impressive winner. Bragging then went to York for the Middleton Stakes, however, didn't handle the increased distance that day and will thoroughly appreciate the stiff straight mile at Ascot.
4.20pm – The Grey Gatsby
The Prince of Wales' Stakes is the feature race of the day and Kevin Ryan's The Grey Gatsby can bounce back to his best. He disappointed in the Dubai Turf at Meydan in March and the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last month, however, the former was against the classy Solow and the ground was too soft on the latter occasion. I spoke with Ryan earlier this week and he couldn't be more pleased with the son of Mastercraftsman and has made him his best bet of the week. Confidence is high in the camp and he is the selection.
5.00pm – Speculative Bird
The Royal Hunt Cup is always a difficult race to select, however, I'll opt for Speculative Bird. The son of Excellent Art was an emphatic winner of the Victoria Cup at Ascot last time when he swooped from last to first with relative ease. He's been raised ten pounds for that win, but, I think David Elsworth's charge could possibly be a Group horse in the making and he can confirm that by winning this.
5.35pm – Osalia
Osalia sits at the top of the weights for this contest but comes well back down in class following the 1000 Guineas. Richard Hannon's charge was a fine winner of the Neil Glynn in April and Frankie Detorri was confident she could place in the classic. That did not prevail, but she's clearly a horse who is well regarded and can bounce back.
