2.30pm Queen Anne Stakes

The meeting gets underway with the Queen Anne Stakes over 1m for horses aged four and older.  A field of 20 runners has lined up and is headed on official ratings by one of the Richard Hannon representatives – TORONADO (1/1 William Hill). 

After falling foul of Dawn Approach in both the 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes, Toronado took revenge by claiming the Sussex Stakes and beating his conqueror by half a length in an impressive fashion.  Despite disappointing in the Juddmonte International, the return to 1m is an obvious positive and he has a good record when fresh.

The biggest challenger looks to be Verrazano who should come on plenty for his third place finish in the Lockinge.  That day he was beaten by Olympic Glory, a stablemate to Toronado and an absentee in this field.  Clearly connections believe Toronado should have the measure of Verrazano and providing the ground doesn’t turn to good to firm that should well be the case.

4.25pm St James’s Palace Stakes 

The feature race of the opening day of Royal Ascot is the St James’s Palace Stakes which sees the rematch between this year’s 2,000 Guineas winner, Night Of Thunder, and runner-up, KINGMAN (1/1 Betfred).  

Despite finishing only second at Newmarket, Kingman has shown impressive fem this season having beaten Night Of Thunder on their first starts of the season and having won the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh.  

Night Of Thunder seemed to thrive at Newmarket off a strong pace where he was able to pick off those sent for home early on.  Kingman was one such horse, but with a steadier pace likely to be set by the seven runners and the fact they are racing on the round course, conditions could well suit John Gosden’s runner and he should reestablish his authority.
