JLT Novices’ Chase Expert Betting Tips

The winner of this race is likely to come from the first four in the betting.  VAUTOUR (9/4 bet365) heads the betting and won last year’s Supreme and was immediately installed as the ante-post favourite for the Champion Hurdle and the Arkle Chase.  With Un De Sceaux looking unbeatable the Mullins team have opted for this race with the Robin Des Champs gelding.  He’s had one mishap over fences at Leopardstown but apart from that looks to set the standard here.

Mullins’ other runner, Valseur Lido, is a very smart chaser himself and should improve for his run last time out.  Whether or not he can overturn form with Apache Stronghold or not is debatable though.  It looks hard to separate the two runners and both look likely to play their part in what looks an intriguing race.  The trip is ideal for Apache Stronghold and he gets the tentative nod to confirm placings from Leopardstown last time out.

Ptit Zig runs for Paul Nicholls, who had a trio of winners on Day 2.  This horse was just shy of Champion Hurdle class and looks to be an even better chaser.  He was four from four before crashing out last time out, something which may have dented his confidence, but he’s a live contender here should he pit in a clean round of jumping.

Of the others The Tullow Tank is the one at a price that sticks out for me, he wasn’t right most of the season but finished an encouraging fourth behind Apache Stronghold last time out.  He should come on for that run and if you’re looking for an outsider that may cause a bit of an upset look no further that the Barry Connell owned gelding.

VAUTOUR gets the vote here; he was a very impressive winner of last year’s Supreme Novice Hurdle and looks a horse to keep on your side.  He’s short enough in the betting but is bred to stay the trip, and with Willie Mullins in such good form it is hard to ignore the Rich Ricci owned horse.
