After the excitement of Royal Ascot, the racing schedule settles down once again with some good quality racing today. Meetings at Doncaster and, particularly, Newcastle catch the eye and we have listed the best bets for the day’s action.

3.35pm Doncaster

ZERFAAL (9/2 Betfred) wasn’t himself last time at Newmarket however he should be tuned up to win this race. The three-year-old has been progressive so far this year and goes on any surface. Although he isn’t a superstar, his trainer John Gosden is flying at the minute, having saddled several winners including Kingman and The Fugue at the Royal meeting. Zerfaal may not be as good as those two, however he looks the best horse in this contest and his tendency to dig in in the closing stages of his races is a mighty attractive trait.

In terms of dangers, the market favourite – Knavery looked very impressive on debut at Kempton. However, his opening mark of 90 looks a tad harsh and he might be vulnerable.

7.10pm Newcastle

On the eve of the Northumberland Plate, we have a tough middle-distance filly’s Listed race to crack. PELERIN (6/4 William Hill) ran superbly last time out at Newbury, travelling comfortably in the rear of the field and finishing strongly behind the progressive Eastern Bell. She’s officially rated 97 after that effort however I think that underestimates her progressive nature. She receives the very welcomed weight for age allowance and the fast ground at Newcastle will hold no fears.

Lily Rules ran respectably in the Oaks and we’ve seen how good the Classic form is. She finished ninth at Epsom and if she is able to replicate that form she will go close. David O’Meara is a trainer worth following in hot handicaps. He has two runners here and stable jockey Danny Tudhope rides ALGAR LAD (5/1 bet365), which is noteworthy in itself. The four-year-old has progressed well this season, finishing a close second at Musselburgh before dispatching the field at Leicester on good to firm ground. The son of Kheleyf has plenty of speed in his pedigree and his best performances have come over today’s trip.

Plenty are in with a shout though, with Asian Trader a major player in the race. The gelding won on just his second appearance of the season on ground with more cut than preferred and, despite being raised 5lbs, he looks capable of running a big race.
