Day 1 of the Derby meeting was run on good ground with the sun shining and the ground drying throughout the afternoon.  Unfortunately a band of wet weather is threatening to hit the track early on Saturday morning and that could well determine the outcome of the Derby itself with a number of horses who will be inconvenienced by cut in the ground. 

That said, I am still currently happy with both of my selections, starting with veteran French raider CIRRUS DES AIGLES (4/5 bet365) who looks to add to his amazing £5,642,357 career earnings courtesy of the Coronation Cup at 2.40pm.  Although he cannot be called unbeatable, he is certainly impossible to sensibly oppose in this contest.  The 1m4f trip is just about within his range (though he may be better over shorter), while wins on going from good to firm through to heavy show he will handle any underfoot conditions, so although not much of a price, he does look like the banker of the day.

As for the Derby, forecast rain has seen AUSTRALIA (6/4 SkyBet) on the drift all week, though with no good reason that I can see.  A son of Galileo, where he found the pace to place third in the 2,000 Guineas is beyond me, and he looked to have had the ideal Derby trial.  Reports from Ballydoyle are that he is in fantastic form and with that in mind I cannot oppose him here.  To me, his breeding suggests a bit of cut in the ground will hardly inconvenience him, though clearly other pundits disagree, and if he is as good as they think in Ireland, then he looks a solid selection.
