The Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock is one of the feature races for this Saturday.  This Group 3 race is run by mares and fillies, aged 4 or older and 11 head to post for this extended 1m3f contest.

Last year’s winner Moment In Time (7/1 William Hill) takes her chance in the race again. She sprang a minor surprise when successfully stepping up in grade to land the contest.  Martin Lane takes the ride today, for David Simcock, and the pair will have to improve on this season’s results in order to do the double.  She can be vulnerable, especially on a softer surface, but she does well at Haydock, and could go well. 

Trainer John Gosden runs two in the race, with stable jockey William Buick opting for Sultanina (10/1 bet365).  She only has the one run under her belt, but in that run, she defied inexperience to win.  This is a slight step up in trip, but she stayed on well enough last time out to think she’ll have enough in reserve.  With Buick choosing her instead of Freedom’s Light, she’s very much respected.

Gosden’s other runner – Freedom’s Light (14/1 SkyBet), ridden by Frankie Dettori, has had a consistent career, but hasn’t quite shown the class needed to be able to win a Group race.  There is a good chance that there is more to come but such progress will be needed to feature here.  She finished third last time out behind Special Meaning (who runs here) not quite seeing out the distance, and the slight step back in trip here should suit.  Special Meaning (20/1 bet365), for Mark Johnston, was a game front runner when victorious in that Listed race at Goodwood, but that could be as good as it gets for the mare.  She seems to have limitations, and this could just be a step to far.

Last time out, CUBANITA (10/3 William Hill) failed to stay 1m6f and the step back in trip is bound to suit.  Until her disappointing last run, she had done little wrong, most notably beating Noble Mission back in April.  Noble Mission was a Group 1 winner last weekend winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, so on that piece of form alone, she has an obvious chance and should have enough quality to defy her 3lb penalty. 

One that looks to have something to find with Cubanita is Astonishing (10/3 bet365), after finishing fourth behind her and Noble Mission at Newbury last month.  The soft ground could be the main worry here, having never encountered as of yet.  She does look a progressive type however, and there would be no surpass to see her reverse the form.

CUBANITA has the best form in the race, and with Noble Mission becoming a Group 1 winner on Sunday, she has to be the pick of the field.  There is some strong opposition however, with the John Gosden pair, and Astonishing standing out, but for me Cubanita is the one that will take all the beating.
