At the start of the World Cup not many would have predicted that this fixture would be to decide who finishes top of Group B. With Spain’s exit following defeat to both of these sides, along with Australia, it comes down to a straight shootout in Sao Paulo on Monday 23^rd June 2014 to decide the order of the top two in the Group.

The Netherlands come into the game off the back of an amazing performance to beat Spain 5-1 in their opening Group B game, followed up by a hard fought victory coming from 2-1 down to beat Australia 3-2. Impressive performances from their two front men, Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie, have shown a clinical edge to an all round attacking team display. A 5-3-2 formation gives the Dutch the option to push their wing backs forward and, as Danny Blind showed against Spain, provided telling crosses for Robben and Van Persie to get on the end of.

However, their captain and joint leading goal scorer in the tournament thus far, Van Persie, will be suspended for the game against Chile having picked up two bookings in the first two matches. With able deputies such as Huntelaar and Depay, who scored the winner against Australia, it will not likely change the shape of the team or indeed weaken its quality.

Chile have been the revelation in Group B with their quick counter-attacking style of play and their no fear approach when facing the so called ‘top teams’. They were rampant in the first half against Spain and with goals from Vargas and Aranguiz they effectively finished the game in the first 45 minutes. Many questioned their defensive capabilities before the tournament but with their collective team spirit and desire they have proven many of those doubters wrong and have only conceded 1 goals thus far in the Group.

Chile’s inspirational talisman, Alexis Sanchez, is already of the mark in the tournament with their opening goal in this World Cup and will be looking to add to his tally on Monday evening. This is a very experienced Chile squad who have already shown that they are capable of beating anyone on their day. They have also shown how strong the South American qualifying group has been for the World Cup this year when you consider they finished third behind Argentina and Columbia and when you look at the fact that all five nations who qualified from the CONMEBOL Group have either already qualified for the knockout stages or have their destiny in their own hands going into the last round of group matches.

For the runners-up it will mean the unenviable task of a last 16 clash with Brazil, barring a shock result in the last games in Group A, and a tough path to the final thereafter.
