Preview & Betting Tips- The Puerto Rico Open 2013

Hosted at the Trump International Golf Club this is the 5th running of The Puerto Rico Open.  With the world’s top 50 and selected others competing at the WGC event this week, a great opportunity arises for someone to claim a title and the rewards that go with it.  A much stronger field this year should make for a fierce battle to claim the title, Henrik Stenson and one of last week’s stars Luke Guthrie head the betting.

The Event

The Par 5’s tend to produce birdies on the par-72, 7,526-yard Trump International course, the wind tends to play a significant role on this course and we are looking for players who can score on the Par 5’s,hit plenty of GIR and are either playing well currently or have good course form.  With many of the usual suspects playing elsewhere we may be able to find some value in this event, a likely winning score of approx 14 to 16 under par suggests bogey avoidance could also be a factor here.

Main picks

Kevin Stadler- 25/1 EW

Two top 10’s here in the last 5 years and a 3rd place finish just a few weeks back at Pebble Beach this must be a prime opportunity for the Walrus Mark 2 to break his duck on the PGA tour.  An excellent ball striker, ranking 5th in total driving and 45th in GIR on tour this season, making his 6th straight appearance in this event – in good form and must be extremely confident on this layout.

Matt Jones- 40/1 EW

The Aussie already has 4 top 30 finishes on the PGA tour this season and finished 5th here last year, he is ranked an impressive 17th in bogey avoidance and 13th in all around ranking on the tour this season.  He has excellent putting inside 10ft which is helping to keep the bogeys off the card, we need his GIR to be better than average this week (ranked 90th to date this season) but he is 6th in total driving suggesting much of his work will be taking place from the fairways, should cope well if the wind blows, he hit a 68 in tough conditions in the final round of the Honda last week.

John Rollins- 40/1 EW

A fantastic ball striker who should excel in tough condition where consistent ball striking can overcome a slightly less effective short game, he should pick up the relatively easy Par 5 birdies while his ability to keep bogey’s off the card (ranked  21st inn bogey avoidance) will serve him well.  He struggles with the putter, his long game is so solid he just needs to have an above average week with the flat stick to place here.

Brian Stuard- 50/1 EW

Excellent start to the season for Stuard who lies 8th in the early season scoring averages, also ranks an impressive 7th in strokes gained putting; being particularly impressive inside 15ft which is a handy skill to have.   Not long from the tee but is ranked an impressive 16th in proximity to the hole, this suggests his irons are dialled in at present; price suggests he might be an unfashionable selection this week, I think it would be a mistake to overlook him.

Peter Uihlein- 66/1 EW

Coming off a 4th place finish in the Tshwane Open on the European tour this talented player is truly finding his feet as a Professional after a stellar Amateur career, much like last week this is a long course where the wind could be a factor and Uihlein handled these condition nicely.  Despite a missed cut here last year, sticks out at 66/1 as a form player with pedigree in a weak, but no doubt improved field.
