Marseille v Groningen – Marseille (-1) Handicap

Groningen don't travel well, they picked up their first maximum haul on the road at the weekend against bottom club and hopeless case De Graafschap as they held on despite a nervy finish to win 2-1. That followed a 2-2 draw with concession specialists Cambuur. Two very easy away fixtures which were not entirely convincing form the side on their travels. They are on the road again, this time in France as they take on a Marseille side who had an impressive result at the weekend. They've now won 3 consecutive away games and their three points against high flying St Etienne was the most impressive of the lot. They've only lost once in 4 games now and although they do need to improve their home form, they should have too much for Groningen, whose small squad is still struggling to deal with the pressures of Eredivisie, KNVB Beker and Europa League. The Dutch side have picked up just 1 point in this group so far and it should be Marseille who come away with the points here. 

 

Liverpool v Bordeaux – Liverpool to score over 1.5 team goals 

Jurgen Klopp seems to be getting his ideas across and it was evident in the 4-1 thumping of Man City. There is still work to do for a Liverpool side that often concede, but they were pacy and incisive on Saturday and the two Brazilians combined well. However, he may opt to make some changes here, I don't think he will want to upset the harmony of his team and will name a strong 11. If the tempo is anything like the Premier League game, they will cause Bordeaux problems here at Anfield. They are yet to lose in the group and a 1-0 win away in Russia was an excellent result. Klopp likes European Club compeitions and will want to see his side go far here. Bordeaux are yet to win in their group with 3 draws and a loss. They a decent at home, where they've won 3 of their llast 4, but away they are inconsistent and have conceded at least 2 goals in their last 5 matches in Ligue 1 including 6 to Nice earlier in the campaign. 

 

Villareal v Rapid Vienna – Rapid Vienna (+1) Handicap

There's something about this competition that is bringing out the best in the Austrian side as they are unbeaten in their group and already assured of a place in the next round. However, we're banking on them not letting the momentum slip. They beat Villareal in Austria on the opening matchday as they emerged 2-1 winners. They have won well away at Plzen and Dinamo Minsk and look good on the road in this competition. Villareal have had quite a good tournament so far, with 3 back to back wins, but the momentum and spirit of Rapid might not be an easy obstacle. This game could easily end a draw and by covering the handicap, we should hopefully be victorious. Vienna seem to prefer playing around Europa than in their own league, where they have been inconsistent at best, but they did win 6-1 away at Mattersburg last time out, which suggests they have plenty of goals in them, Villareal have drawn with Eibar, lost to Celta Vigo and beaten Sevilla at home in their last 3 games here, so it's a mixed bag for the Spanish side, but I think Vienna's Europa League momentum will make them hard to dispatch. 

 

Celtic v Ajax – Celtic Draw No Bet

Yes, it's odd to be backing Celtic, but they drastically need the points and Ajax haven't travelled well on Thursday nights. The Scots have just two points from their opening four games and it's going to be hard for them to qualify with Ronnie Deila's position under scrutiny. Ajax have only picked up one more point and they shared a 2-2 draw in Amsterdam on Matchday one. In their domestic leagues, both these sides have picked up three wins from their last 4 with both sides only losing once all season. Celtic were hopeless at defending earlier in the tournament, so that is something they need to concentrate on, they kept a clean sheet against Kilmarnock at the weekend, whilst this is a stronger opponent, Ajax have struggle to bring their Eredivisie goals into the European competition. It promises to be an end to end match and I fancy the home side to shade it, just.
