England v Italy Betting Tips and Predictions

It is finally upon us, England take on Italy in Manaus and we have free World Cup 2014 betting tips.

After months of build up, at 11PM on Saturday 14th June, England take to the field at the World Cup 2014 in a massive opening clash. With three top sides in England, Italy and Uruguay taking part in this group, getting off to a good start is massively important to both sides.

England have hardly inspired in their three warm up friendlies, beating a very poor Peru side 3-0 at Wembley before drawing 2-2 with Ecuador and 0-0 with a weak Honduras side both in Miami. Friendlies can be deceiving though and at times against Ecuador, England looked good going forward. The likes of Barkley, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sterling have impressed whereas stalwarts such as Glen Johnson and Wayne Rooney have not.

It seems that Roy won’t be particularly ambitious in his first team selection at the World Cup 2014 with many of the impressive players above looking likely to miss out. England last faced Italy at a big tournament back in 2012 in the Euros Quarter-Finals and that day Roy looked to shut up shop and play for the draw, which they did very well until crashing out on penalties.

Italy’s World Cup preparations haven’t been much better though, they lost key man Ricardo Montolivo to a broken leg last week and results have been a bit flat. They have drawn with Ireland and minnows Luxembourg in their last two friendlies and haven’t won in seven matches now but they have drawn six of these. Five of these have been friendlies and against Luxembourg in particular they did try different things.

This game is a tricky one to call with the World Cup 2014 betting odds showing Italy as favorites at 13/8 with Bet365, the draw at 2/1 with Betfred and England best price to win at 11/5 with Coral.

This may seem obvious but in this case, both of these sides will be concentrating on not losing this game. With Uruguay opening their account just before against Costa Rica they should start with a win so neither side here will want to drop points. Italy have only lost one of their opening matches in World Cup history but drew their opening games at Euro 2012 and the World Cup 2010.  England also opened their accounts in those years by picking up a point.

All of this plus the fact Italy have drawn six of their last seven and England their last two points me right in the direction of a draw. Both sides will want to get a point and move forward from there and  2/1 is not a bad price at all with Betfred on the draw for our first World Cup 2014 betting tip.

I don’t fancy this to be a 0-0 though. A England drew 1-1 with USA back in 2010 and with France at Euro 2012, while Italy did the same with Paraguay in 2010 and Spain in 2012. Italy have drawn 1-1 with Germany and Luxembourg of late and have kept just three clean sheets in their previous fifteen matches. A 1-1 draw is a good price at 11/2 with William Hill.

Watching England also though in their friendlies they aren’t the most secure at the back so a goal at both ends is certainly on the cards. Both teams to score is a big price at 11/8 with Coral.
