England got their Champions Trophy campaign off to a good start with a 48 run victory against Australia at Edgbaston. England batted reasonably well in that game with Ian Bell top scoring with 91, while Ravi Bopara whacked a 46 not out off 37 balls. Jonathan Trott also pitched in with 43. England’s middle order didn’t perform brilliantly with Root, Morgan and Buttler all failing to score over 15 runs and we could see them bounce back with high scores against Sri Lanka. England bowled very well and managed to reduce Australia to 221. The fast bowlers performed best, claiming 6 of the 9 Aussie wickets, with 3 coming from James Anderson.  England will be looking for more from James Tredwell, who gave away 51 runs from his 10 overs, claiming just one wicket. England can effectively guarantee a place in the semi finals with a win and they will be keen to do so before they play New Zealand in their final group game. New Zealand defeated England 2-1 in the warm up series so England will not fancy needing a win against them to qualify.

Sri Lanka performed very poorly in their opening group A match against New Zealand and desperately need a win to have a chance of making the semi finals. They only ended up losing by just one wicket but they only managed to make a mere 138 all out with the bat. The batsmen performed miserably with wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara the only player to make an impact with a score of 68. Opener Kusal Perera didn’t make any runs as did Dinesh Chandimal. Only three Sri Lankans made it in to double figures for runs with Thisara Perera making 15 and Tillakaratne Dilshan 20 along with Sangakkara’s knock.  They have some very dangerous batsmen and players like Mahela Jayawardene and Kusal Perera will be looking to make an improvement on their first game showings. Sri Lanka needed a good performance with the ball and they got it. Danger man Lasith Malinga was their star performer claiming 4 wickets while giving up only 34 runs from his 10 overs. Shaminda Eranga claimed 2 wickets while Dilshan and Herath each took one.  The Sri Lankan bowlers did very well, taking 9 New Zealand wickets but they couldn’t find the all important tenth to win the match. Sri Lanka’s bowlers are among the world’s best and will always be a threat. If their batsmen can perform well they could pull of a win against the hosts.

Sri Lanka will be going all out to try and claim a much needed victory but I think England have enough about them to see off the Sri Lankan challenge
