England’s preparations for the tournament haven’t exactly gone to plan and go in to the match off the back of a 2-1 ODI series defeat to New Zealand, although they did win the final match of the series which will give them some much needed confidence. England will have to improve both their batting and bowling if they are to not only win this match, but have a chance of going far in the tournament. Captain Alastair Cook’s form is a concern for England with him having little impact on the ODI series. Ian Bell didn’t contribute much in the first two ODIs but made an impressive 82 in the final match which will provide him with some confidence.  England’s middle order was also impressive with Jonathan Trott, Eoin Morgan and Jos Butler scoring well.  Fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad have been in reasonably good form but have the ability to step their game up a level. James Tredwell and Graham Swann have also done a decent job with the ball recently, as has the other key bowler, Tim Bresnan.  The game is on English soil and they will also have the majority of the crowd on their side which will spark a bit of atmosphere and give the players the encouragement they need to win the match.

Australia are seeking their third straight ICC Champions Trophy and will hope to get off to a strong start. However, they will be without their captain, Michael Clarke after he was ruled out with a back injury. The Australian team has been lacking in consistency for quite some time now, particularly in their  warm-up matches leading up to the tournament. They comfortably beat the West Indies with 11.1 overs to spare in their opening game, but then suffered a thumping 243 run defeat at the hands of India, after being bowled out for just 65 in chasing a target of 309. Shane Watson and Mitchell Marsh have been on good form recently but Australia’s other batsmen have failed to make any real impact in the warm up matches. In terms of bowling, they have been doing reasonably well with Mitchell Starc and Clint McKay amongst the wickets. The Aussies could go with a pace orientated bowling attack as neither Xavier Doherty or Glenn Maxwell played in the warm up matches. Australia could really struggle with the loss of Michael Clarke but a combination of solid batting and ruthless bowling could get them the win.

These teams have met three times in the history of the Champions trophy. Australia have won two of the meetings, with England winning the other.

England to win – 7/10

Australia to win 11/10
