DON COSSACK (4/1 Paddy Power) heads the market, a continual improver this season for Gordon Elliott. A step back down to this sort of trip has helped with some smart rivals left behind in recent starts. He looked as if he was getting the upper hand on Champion Chase fancy Champagne Fever when that rival came down at the final fence at Thurles last time. A good performance by that one on the Tuesday would see Don Cossack considerably shorter on the day.
Balder Success looks much more at home over two and a half miles these days with fluent wins the last twice at Kempton and Ascot. On both official ratings and form, he would look to have a very solid chance but a record round Cheltenham of two falls and an unseat tempers confidence.
Ma Filleule finished behind Balder Success at Ascot but she came alive at the both Festivals last season when second at Cheltenham behind Holywell before winning at Aintree. The hill should bring her extra stamina into play with the mares’ allowance another handy factor to take note of.
John's Spirit has been well touted up for this contest in some circles having left handicap company behind him. He travelled beautifully in the King George before his stamina ebbed away so a return to a more suitable trip will suit. The main negative is his Spring form, just one win from 10 career starts after the turn of the year including two unsuccessful previous Festival visits.
Cue Card can't be forgotten returned to the scene of two previous Festival successes. He has rarely come close to the form he showed when winning this corresponding race two seasons ago but would find himself bang in contention managing to reproduce his best.
At bigger prices, the unexposed EDUARD (E/W) (25/1 Ladbrokes) has to be of interest for Nicky Richards. He never stopped improving as a novice and has two gallant runner-up efforts to his credit this season. In the first of those he failed by just a length and a half to give future Hennessy winner, Many Clouds, six pounds. Given that that horse is fancied to win the Gold Cup it's astonishing to think Eduard can be found at four times his price.
DON COSSACK (4/1 Paddy Power) really has impressed this season and it's not hard to see why he is favourite here. Most of those in behind him in the betting have question marks surrounding them and one can't help but feel if he were from the Willie Mullins camp he would be half the price. It's not easy to win at the Festival without a recent prep but a chance has to be taken on EDUARD (E/W) (25/1 Ladbrokes) who seems well overpriced based on this season’s form.
