1.45 – Sportingbet.com Earl Grosvenor Handicap (Class 2) 7f122y

E/W Selection: CHOSEN CHARACTER @ 8/1 with Betfred

Has not troubled the winners enclosure in two starts so far this year but he is a previous course and distance winner and a return to Chester in these conditions should suit him well. He made all to win here last September and he is drawn to do so again from stall 1. A winner in heavy ground at Haydock last season he will appreciate the rain that has fallen and if he breaks well in these conditions he could prove tough to pass with a return to form. Visor is back on and although this is a tougher race than the types he was winning last season he can make a bold bid from the front

2.45 – Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes (Group 3) 1m5f89y

Selection: MEMPHIS TENNESSEE @ Evens with Ladbrokes

Comfortable winner of this race last year the Aiden O’Brien trained Memphis Tennessee is looking to become the first horse since 2002 to successfully defend this race. He only ran one more time after winning last year when disappointing at Ascot and he has not been seen for a long time. He is entitled to need this run but he still holds strong claims. Course form is always a positive at Chester and that he has, whilst his victory also came in soft underfoot conditions which will be similar to the conditions he encounters here. In contrast to his main market rival Mount Athos the recent weather although not ideal shouldn’t compromise his chances too much and coming into the race off a similar kind of break to last season, he should be fit enough to do himself justice. Mount Athos does provide a big test and although he would prefer better ground he stays very well, so a slog may well play to his strengths too. The race looks to be between the two of them and with the ground likely to be fairly soft Memphis Tennessee gets the nod to follow up last years success

3.15 – Sustainable Group (uk) Ltd E.b.f. Handicap (Class 2) 5f16y

E/W Selection: NORMAL EQUILIBRIUM @ 11/2 with Sky Bet

Ran a fair race against several of these rivals last time out at Sandown on his seasonal reappearance when finishing 4th. Met trouble in running that day and was value to finish closer than he did so whilst a clear passage is far from certain around Chester he does look to be on a decent mark. He should come on for that run and although he is unraced on soft ground he should cope with that well enough; his full brother Elnawin was a winner on soft ground. Has plenty of speed and should be involved if he breaks well and finds a good position early in the race
