February begins with a trip to Sandown and a Grade 1 in the shape of the Scilly Isles Novices' chase where OSCAR WHISKY (4/11 Coral) looks very hard to beat.  He has taken well to fences beating a pair of smart novices in the form of Wonderful Charm and Tarquin De Seuil.  There is nothing of that kind of class here and with plenty in hand on official ratings he is deservedly a warm order.  Second best is the Paul Nicholls trained Benvolio (10/3 BetVictor) who has improved with every chase start.  He is very well suited by heavy ground and should be capable of going close.  He dug deep to hold off Maggio at Haydock last time but this will demand a lot more of him.  The only other runner is Manyriverstocross (14/1 Stan James) who has a bit to find with the other pair in all known form.  He began the season with a nose win from a decent sort at Exeter but his latest effort stepped up in grade leaves him well short of what is required to win this baring mishaps.

The coverage begins with the 1.50, a very competitive looking two mile chase where the weights are headed by EASTLAKE (11/2 Betfred).  He won this race last year off a 23lb lower mark but has done nothing but improve since.  He is unbeaten in four starts on soft and heavy ground and a run here would set him up nicely for a crack at the Grand Annual.  He has gone up eight pounds for his latest Cheltenham win but young Tommie O'Brien takes ten off on what will be the biggest ride so far of his burgeoning career.  Desert Cry (5/1 BetVictor) has improved massively for a confidence boosting small field win at Exeter.  At Wetherby last time he comfortably saw off the smart Grey Gold (4/1 Stan James) who reopposes here and with conditions to suit may take the hike in the weights in his stride.  Grey Gold is a likeable sort and on a run in Ireland in the spring would be well in here but he has a little to find on this season's placed efforts despite his obvious love for ground as soft as possible.  Pepite Rose (13/2 BetVictor) travelled beautifully into the race at Kempton last time in a stronger contest before flattening out in the home straight.  The minimum trip will be a help on ground that will probably be a little softer than ideal but she should go well.  Kumbeshwar (7/1 Betfred) is becoming dangerously well handicapped and although he regressed a bit on his most recent outing he still deserves respect.  His four wins over jumps have all been over this minimum trip and it may spark him back into life.

The veterans chase at 3.00 looks to be a very weak affair.  Tatenen (11/4 BetVictor) finally fell to a winnable mark at Newbury last time when fairly running away with what had looked beforehand to be a very competitive handicap.  A 12lb rise may not stop him in such a moderate looking affair but his form on soft ground in recent years leaves a little to be desired.  FINE PARCHMENT (3/1 Stan James) has found a new lease of life this term, unbeaten in three starts including two on this course.  He is undoubtedly quirky as the combination of headgear testifies but he jumps well which is an important factor here and should get his own way out in front.  King Edmund (10/3 Betfred) acts well on soft ground and came right back to form at Kempton last time when always travelling well before pouncing late on.  More than capable of making his presence felt but is becoming more and more inconsistent as he gets older and couldn't be trusted implicitly to repeat his Kempton running.  Aachen (7/2 bet365) was a revelation in his younger days running up sequences both on the flat and over hurdles.  Injury problems have seen him lightly raced since and a chase debut produced a wide margin win at Towcester in 2012.  Unsurprisingly massively below that on his belated return at Wetherby but is worthy of a watching brief in the betting to see if improvement is expected.

The 3.35 is the Betfred Masters chase where stamina will be at a premium on the uphill finish after a three mile slog in this ground.  Soll (6/1 Betfred) is 6lbs higher than when winning over C&D in March on ground very similar to today's.  He has run a pair of corkers since and if granted a soft lead would be very dangerous in this.  He is unlikely to get that though with Handsupfordetroit (16/1 Stan James) in opposition.  He found the step down in trip against him last time at Wincanton having put up a dour staying performance at Chepstow the time before.  He has a tendency to clout the odd fence along the way which won't help round here but he has the look of a strong stayer and a possible Welsh National winner in the future.  Roalco De Farges (15/2 BetVictor) would be very well weighted on his run in the 2012 bet365 Chase when we last saw him.  He is entitled to come on for the run but should be noted in both betting and parade rings for clues.  Theatrical Star (11/1 Coral) and Jump City (9/1 Stan James) are still just about well enough handicapped to challenge but the vote here is going to the winner of this race last year, ON TREND (7/1 bet365).  Somehow he has found himself 10lbs lower than that win and comes here off the back of a solid run in the same Kempton race that connections used as a prep last year.

The Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las is a fascinating looking contest with most of these runners looking to put a stamp on final Cheltenham Festival plans.  SAPHIR DU RHEU (2/1 BetVictor) is improving at a real rate of knots defying a raise in the weights of more than a stone at Kempton last time.  He is another 13lbs higher here but he was well in command in that Kempton race.  Grand Vision (5/1 Betfred) and Whisper (5/2 Coral) are the most likely pair with chances here to trouble the Nicholls trained selection.  The former travelled really well on his Cheltenham return before fading then ran a cracker behind Uncle Jimmy at Warwick.  The Henderson trained runner is 20lbs better off with Saphir De Rheu for a nine length beating at Sandown and having run a competitive field into the ground at Newbury last time is likely to go close.  The feeling is though that despite the swing in the weights the Nicholls runner has improved more than that in the interim.  Awaywiththegreys (12/1 Stan James) has form over further, winning over three miles at Chepstow last time.  This is a step up in class but if this turns into a slog then Peter Bowen's charge would come into the reckoning.

The other Ffos Las contest is a stamina sapping three and a half mile handicap chase that is likely to take an awful lot of getting in these ground conditions.  Welsh National hero, Mountainous (11/2 BetVictor) looks to have a good opportunity to add another big staying prize to his repertoire.   He had to show a lot of guts to win at Chepstow but as a young improver the extra weight he carries here in a weaker race shouldn't be any concern.  Flying Award (14/1 Betfred) is a dour stayer who showed he wasn't finished going up the handicap just yet with a victory at Wincanton on his latest start.  Lightly raced for his age there is a chance a bit more improvement still remains with this proper stamina test likely to be right up his street.  EMPERORS CHOICE (6/1 bet365) is dangerously well handicapped on the same mark as when last victorious.  Heavy ground and marathon trips suit perfectly and if ridden more prominently than of late (last years wins when up with the pace) he is a big threat to all and worthy of the pick.  Bob Ford (12/1 Stan James) looked for all the world that a step up in trip was required when running over three miles but didn't back that up when trying this far for the first time at Haydock.  Lightly raced enough to be given another chance he has the very able Patrick Corbett to help in the saddle.  Sir Du Bearn (20/1 bet365) has improved for the step up in trip recently both here and at Haydock.  He acts very well on soft ground and could find the improvement necessary to bustle up more fancied rivals.

A third track will welcome the Channel 4 cameras with Wetherby hosting the Grade 2 Towton novices chase.  Shutthefrontdoor (6/4 Betfred) is favourite for the O'Neill and McCoy combination.  His chase efforts thus far are not as good as his hurdles ones but the return to a softer surface is likely to suit.  On a line through Beeves though he has a lot to find with Ely Brown (9/2 Coral).  Charlie Longsdon's horse was massively impressive in his recent Leicester victory on just his second start over fences and a softer surface is not a problem for him.  The vote here is going to GREEN FLAG (5/2 bet365) who followed up his demolition jobs in Northern novice chases with a game second in the Feltham at Kempton over Christmas.  Annacotty who won that Kempton race has run really well since when second in a handicap off 144 with the return to a more galloping track certainly in Green Flag's favour.  He would also have a bit to find with Ely Brown on a hurdles run behind Beeves but he has been massively improved now facing the bigger obstacles.
