British Raiders Fail To Make An Impact on French Guineas Day

The Richard Hannon trained Olympic Glory was sent off a 3/1 favourite for the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp, but he never looked like winning from his wide draw. He was forced to race wide throughout and eventually came home in 11th, staying on to some effect towards the finish. The other Richard Hannon colt Havana Gold ran a big race cutting through the field to take up the running with 150 yards to go before failing to hold off a late charge from winner Style Vendome. In a tight finish the Nicolas Clement trained grey held off the finishing efforts of the Aiden O’Brien trained Gale Force Ten amongst others to make it five wins from six career starts to date

In the fillies’ equivalent it was Breeders Cup heroine Flotilla who came out on top edging out favourite Esoterique close home. After Sky Lantern’s victory in the English 1000 Guineas, Flotilla is the 2nd winner of a Classic this season to have contested the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies’ race last season. The Richard Hannon trained Zurigha again had a wide draw to contend with but she fared well in the circumstances to finish a staying on 4th, whilst Waterway Run further advertised that Breeders Cup form back in 6th for Ralph Beckett. Winner Flotilla now has the option of making the journey across for Royal Ascot, with the Coronation Stakes a possible engagement

Despite fielding 6 of the 9 contenders for the Group 3 Prix De Saint-Georges later on the card it was again the French-trained runners who came out on top on home soil, with Catcall holding off a strong finishing Move In Time under Daniel Tudhope. The Robert Cowell trained favourite Monsieur Joe finished a very close 2nd in the race last year but ran no sort of race, fading under Olivier Peslier to come home 8th.

David O’Meara will be hoping Move In Time can build on that career best effort back in England, with entries in the Temple Stakes (20/1 with Betfred) and King’s Stand (50/1 with Coral)
