Australia v Spain Betting Tips and Predictions

So far this tournament, everything's happened in twos for Spain and Australia who meet on Monday in what will now be the final game of the 2014 World Cup for both and these are our World Cup 2014 betting tips.

Spain will look back on two glaring misses that could've so easily calmed the looming crisis their World Cup became; the pain of which will by no means be eased with a Group B victory against Australia.

First, there was David Silva who chipped delicately wide against the Netherlands in what would've put his team 2-0 up; we all know what happened from there on. Then there was Sergio Busquets firing horribly wide from inside the six-yard area with the goal gaping as his side desperately chased the goal that would half the deficit between themselves and Chile, giving the Spanish some hope of snatching a draw and avoid becoming the first ever defending champions to crash out after just two games. But it wasn't to be – two huge, missed chances at crucial stages in both games ultimately ended Spain's dominance.

Already joining the Spanish as a casualty of the group stages is Australia. By no means a World Cup disaster, the Socceroos will reflect on defensive lapses that, being prevented, might've kept them in with an unlikely shot of progressing to the last 16 for the first time since 2006.

Two minutes of a loss of concentration early on against Chile put Australia in a position they never recovered from and, despite the class of Arjen Robben shining through in their second match for the opening goal, two decisive moments in the form of a misjudged offside trap and an awkward swerving long-range effort cost them a famous win over the Netherlands.

But with Tim Cahill's wonder volley and a short, but very sweet, lead against the Dutch, you can be sure that, no matter what happens on Monday, the Australians will be taking much fonder memories home from Brazil than their Spanish counterparts.

With pride only left as the prize for these two sides, I think Spain have more reason to go for the win than Australia do. Oceania's only representatives can leave South America with their heads held high regardless of Monday's result; Spain may as well be smuggled home if they endure another defeat, one that would inevitably reduce the gap between themselves and their opponents in the next update of the FIFA world rankings.

It would also be expected that Spain will benefit from the absence of Australian talisman Tim Cahill who misses the game through suspension, leaving a question mark as to where goals will come from for the Socceroos. For Spain though, it's highly likely that there's never been this much pressure on a team with nothing to play for to win and I think this time they'll do it.

So staying with the pattern, I'll go for Spain by two goals, and with every available member of each nation's squad now in the frame to start, it's worth backing anyone to open the scoring and grab the headlines.
