Barry Geraghty isn’t often seen on British soil during the week, but with a two-day card at Cheltenham starting on Wednesday, coming over a day early will hopefully be worthwhile. On what looks a bit of an awkward mare, trainer Nicky Henderson will be hoping that Geraghty can bring out the best in MISS BALLANTYNE (8/1 Coral). To me, it looks like this horse needs further and, although she is untested over this distance, if she can settle in behind a steady pace I think she can show her potential. The better ground won’t be a problem as she has plenty of experience in her career on good ground. Her better form has come in these spring months and she seems to thrive when the sun is on her back. She had an entry at Cheltenham too, but with connections deciding to come here instead, hopefully there is good enough reason.

It won’t be an easy race, with a few runners catching the eye. If the Paul Nicholls trained Merrion Square (11/2 bet365) can stay on his feet he’s sure to be one of the main challengers. Kim Bailey sends Muldoon’s Picnic (6/1 Betfred) into the race – he was last seen when pulling up behind Holywell at the Cheltenham Festival – so he should appreciate the drop in class. Itoldyou (6/1 SkyBet) represents Linda Jewell and, despite the fact that the horse probably needs some cut in the ground, his challenge has to be respected as he will be aiming for a hatrick of wins.

Although MISS BALLANTYNE doesn’t have the pick of the form in the field, I think the booking of Geraghty is worth noting. She looks a difficult ride, and I’m hoping the 3m distance will help her settle properly. At a bigger price I think she’s worth the each-way bet, especially when you take into account the low weight that she carries.
