Which Colin Tizzard Horse is the best Gold Cup Chance?
After Cue Card’s brilliant win at Ascot this weekend, Colin Tizzard all but confirmed he will head to the Cheltenham Gold Cup along with stablemates Native River and Thistlecrack.
Colin Tizzard now trains the top three in the Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup betting odds – a remarkable feat in itself. He is now bracing himself for a “nervous” three weeks ahead of the Festival.
Thistlecrack is the current Gold Cup favourite despite his defeat to the ill-fated Many Clouds around Cheltenham last month. Native River won his prep race with a top class galloping display in the Denman Chase at Newbury. Cue Card is third favourite following his win on Saturday and it would bring the Cheltenham roof down if he was to win the Gold Cup on Friday 17th March.
Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Tips
We haven’t finalised our selection for the Cheltenham Gold Cup yet, but any three of these are good enough to win and it would be foolish to forget Djakadam who could yet spoil the Tizzard party. I can’t help thinking Cue Card will come up just short at the age of 11 and his best chance was probably when falling last year. People are saying Cue Card is back to his best but alongside Thistlecrack, Native River and Djakadam, he could come up short.

Between Thistlecrack and Native River I am more swayed to back Native River at the current prices. He ran his opponents into the group in the Denman Chase and could drag the finish out of Thistlecrack in the gruelling test the Gold Cup always is. Thistlecrack was impressive in the World Hurdle last year but if he is seriously pressed from too far out then he could struggle up the hill. At this moment in time, at the current odds, my Cheltenham Gold Cup betting tip would be Native River.
Tizzard is nervous of getting “any bad luck” ahead of the Cheltenham Gold Cup so make sure you do your ante-post bets with a bookies who are offering no runner no bet, meaning if your horse doesn’t run you’ll get a refund. William Hill are doing exactly that.
