1.45 Newbury
It seems a little harsh to classify eight-year-olds as “veterans” but that’s what the conditions stipulate for this newly-created event.  One such entrant is IRISH BUCCANEER (7/1 William Hill), and he can strike in the first race.  He’s finished in the frame five times from his seven hurdle starts, and actually remains open to improvement over timber.  Bothy drops in class and could play a hand, while Leave It Be and Provo have very few miles on the clock and are respected.

2.15 Newbury
This Veteran’s Handicap Chase contains some familiar faces from the last few years, and it should prove to be an eventful race.  Lurking at the bottom of the weights, off a long absence, is TRIANGULAR (9/1 bet365) and a chance is taken that he’ll be fit enough to make an impact in a race like this.  He’s returned from long breaks before to run well, and against such exposed opposition, there must be a chance that he retains enough ability to be competitive.

3.25 Newbury
Paul Nicholls has won six of the last nine renewals of this race, and so top-weight Sound Investment is a good place to start.  He’ll appreciate dropping back in trip after struggling over further at Ascot, but a mark of 149 looks a high enough.  Royal Regatta is starting to put it together over fences but the vote goes to SAINT RAPH (NAP) (13/2 Paddy Power), who dotted up at Wincanton last time.  He has two wins from three attempts over the larger obstacles and, off a very low weight, he can make light of an 11lb rise in the handicap.

5.05 Newbury
The beautifully-bred SAND BLAST (6/1 bet365) was probably not destined for junior bumpers when he was foaled, but his current connections won’t mind that, and he may be able to make his mark on the racecourse here.  His Catterick second is hardly standout form, but he was well-backed that day and really seemed to warm to his task towards the business end.  Sam Twiston-Davies looks a significant booking for Brian Ellison, who should always be feared on his forays down south.
